Diamond has an adamantane structure, which is quite different from the polycyclic structure of graphene.

its a carbon with a strong and unique structure, close enough, plus the wife will like it.

Diamonds are, in fact, pretty cool.  Particularly artificial ones for an untold number of reasons.  But I'm not considering them for two simple reasons: we want bands rather than something with a central gemstone, and using diamonds is old.  I want something a bit more bleeding edge.

I think she'd be into it, too.  She's certainly not your stereotypical "diamonds are a girl's best friend" kind of girl.

Sounds dangerous...  Serrated glass disk, mayhap? ;)

If you want bleeding edge, it's hard to pass up on Tungsten Carbide.

Tungsten carbide always occupied my mind as "stuff used in expensive drill bits". I'll omit a pun about bleeding edges, but it just doesn't seem jewelry-like enough, and though expensive, not quite exotic enough either.

maybe just wedge a spike through the ring when you put it on her finger?

This is a graphene wedding ring.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It menaces with spikes of steel.  On the item is an image of Graebeard a female female human.  Graebeard is proposing.  The female human is screaming.

when we're brainstorming about general cool ring-applicable stuff, getting some nanoscale etchings on it with photolithography or somehting.

bit of topic, but any SCIENCE!! related ring needs to incorporate aluminium somehow.
Actually, you could do transparent aluminium. We have that now.

When formed and polished as a window, the material currently (2005) costs about US$10 to US$15 per square inch
It may be a bit difficult to find a supplier willing to work out how to make a ring-shape, but the material itself is relatively inexpensive (though that may or may not be a good thing when it comes to making a wedding ring :P). Though it may be a bit tacky if your significant other isn't a trekkie.

Actually, you missed the exact same URL being linked in the spoiler area, just below the image. ;)

Also, there's (as I confirmed, when looking for the more regular kind of "Transparent Alum[in]ium") information also about "Aluminium made transparent (to UV, at least) by knocking out an electron from every atom in a sample, using an extremely powerful laser".  But this "new form of matter" might not be easy to make and wear as jewellery.  You'd need that laser, for a start!
