The Rages of Ale: Arctic Volcano
« on: July 21, 2012, 11:32:14 pm »

I genned a new world with a short history but otherwise default settings and Armok blessed me with an awesome embark spot. It's a volcano sprouting from the tundra surrounded by frozen wasteland and arctic ocean. I decided to take screencaps of my settlement of the fortress Traderims near this volcano and share them on the forum. I'll be uploading the screenshots as I take them, so you will be up to date with what's going on and can give suggestions that may actually influence the fortress.

Here's the map screen:

Some problems I foresee with this embark spot are the lack of flux stone and the aquifer. The lack of trees isn't much of a problem seeing as how I can just trade with caravans for wood and I only really need it for beds. I'll probably just use a cave-in to penetrate the aquifer, but I had a dwarfier idea: routing the lava from the volcano to turn the subterranean water into steam. The biggest problem I think will be the lack of flux. The only way I'm going to be using steel is if I get a caravan carrying flux or steel goods. The lava will make it easy to melt down metal goods at any rate.

9 Stonecrafter

Deduk Idenemuth ♂
10 Miner

Thikut Etasbomrek ♀
10 Miner

Catten Morulthob ♂
6 Bone Carver
7 Herbalist
6 Butcher
8 Crossbowman

Rakust Lalurdim ♀

8 Record Keeper

If you'd like me to rename one of the dwarves to your username, just say so and state the name of the dwarf you want to be. Also I didn't take screenshots of the dwarves' biographies because it seemed like too much work for something nobody cares about, but if that is something you guys would like to see I will gladly post them.

The wagon has stopped at the very peak of this steep mountain, above the top of the volcano. The only wildlife on the map as of now is five ravens. I've assigned Catten to hunting duty, but I doubt he'll kill too many of them with eleven bolts and mediocre crossbow skills. The ravens are flying around out of reach for now anyway. I would have Catten also gather plants, but from what I can see there isn't any harvestable vegetation on this map. I've ordered the two miners to start digging out a modest home for the dwarves. The carpenter is deconstructing the wagon for a few extra logs. Everyone else is hauling our supplies to the entrance of their soon-to-be new home.

After the fortress got dug out I ordered the miners to mine some dacite off the side of the mountain at a lower elevation. Meanwhile I ordered everything to be hauled inside and told Racust and Ducim to construct four 3x3 farm plots in the clay room to the south. After dacite mining commenced, I ordered a carpenter's workshop and a mason's workshop to be built out of it. After Lokum finished building the workshops I commissioned 7 beds to be made (leaving us with only 3 logs in stock) and ordered the miners to dig out bedrooms for everyone. I also ordered a dacite table and chair be constructed so Kivish could get to work. I designated the bottom-right corner of the farming room to be a pen for the chickens and I plan on building dacite nesting boxes when Lokum is done building beds.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think I've mined enough dacite to last the mason a while, so I ordered a deep 3x3 up/down staircase to be dug. The staircase yielded more stone, so I won't be needing to mine any more dacite from outside.

That's all I'm posting at the moment, but I'm going to keep playing and collecting screenshots. When I make future updates I'm simply going to edit this post, not make new posts unless it's necessary. Please give me feedback and suggestions. One thing I need advice on is mining the obsidian from the volcano without getting lava everywhere.

If you want to get through the aquifer, and want to mine obsidian, then the obvious solution is to channel out patches of the aquifer and cast obsidian in them (effectively replacing the aquifer with obsidian).

But maps with volcanoes virtually never have real aquifers, it can happen, but usually, it's only a paper aquifer (i.e. only present on the map, not in reality), or only present in one of the corners or something.

Punch through a multi-z aquifer in under 5 minutes, video walkthrough. I post as /u/BlakeMW on reddit.

Good luck - be grateful you at least have soil layers :).

I am also dismayed that you are not bringing any chicks with you on your embark. Glaciers are already very boring...

Well I've got some hens and a rooster, so I'm sure we'll have chicks before too long :)

If I probably don't have an aquifer, what other way could I mine the obsidian safely?

I got one of those too :D

Except my aquifer didn't appear in the volcano - either volcanoes mess up stone layers/aquifers or I was digging in the correct place to not get flooded.

The first :)

Volcanos tend to generate a patch of igneous rock around them, like a lone mountain.  Thats also why the classic flat surface volcano embarks of previous versions are harder to find.  mountain dont wanna be flat :p

Theres often a fairly wide obsidian plug around a volcano, all else failing if there really is a decent aquifier you can probably sink a shaft beside the magma tube (or chill in soil layers till autumn and buy iron toys from the dwarves.  melt em down and make a magma pump to bore through with obsidian casting)

it's a FREEZING BIOME this is the easiest type of aquifer to break through! Just dig and let it freeze, then engrave it or something.

Or find a way to have an elf corpse frozen in it, bonus points.

Here's the map if you guys want to try it out. The volcano is in the southeastern corner of the map.
