Isometric exercise
« on: July 21, 2012, 08:20:29 am »

Does this work?  Static exercise, is it at the very least, equal to doing push-ups and squats, etc?

Please offer advice, videos, anything helpful.  Preferably from people who have actually done this.

That is all.

Wikipedia to the rescue.

Quote from: Wikipedia
"The distinction is that in a yielding isometric, one is pressing roughly the exact amount of pressure needed to negate the resistance, neither dropping or lifting it."

That says it all imo.

But I guess one could argue that you are building endurance rather than muscle mass?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_exercise#Comparison_with_dynamic_exercises
Quote
Isometric exercises have some differences in training effect as compared to dynamic exercises. While isometric training increases strength at the specific joint angles of the exercises performed and additional joint angles to a lesser extent, dynamic exercises increase strength throughout the full range of motion.
So no, it is not equal, as it really only trains for specific circumstances.
Gah, ninjas.

I thought for a moment you were a spambot.

...

Well, okay, so by the looks of it, it isn't useful?

But that's just Wikipedia.

Having done some, I can say that they are fairly useful, depending on what you want to train. If you're training for something involving a lot of jumping, they're fairly good at strengthening your knees, ankles, and hips. I haven't done any with my arms, so I'm not sure there. (I think the throwers did some in track?)

I did some in kung fu class. We'd do a horse stance (knees bent, legs apart like you're riding a horse) and someone would push down on your shoulders. I liked it, but my legs were always strong without working them out so I couldn't tell you if it made a difference. :P

I bet sitting on my ass all my adult years doesn't count as a good isometric exercise.
