Decorations
« on: October 16, 2007, 03:34:00 pm »

I recently decided to build a masterwork throne and decorate it to the best of my abilities. Here it is so far:

It took me a while and it took the metalsmith 6 tries before he made a masterwork but the extras can go somewhere. Maybe my new dining room. I also learned a few things about decorations. If an item is already decorated with a material then it can not be decorated with that again. Ex. You cannot stud the item with copper then stud it again with copper. The material it is made of is included in this. I was also unable to get silk images woven in but I hadn't tried very hard at that.
Suggestions on what else to do?
Maybe post your own wonderful creations.

And now I can't get it to load.

"The wagon is falling."

I'm just generally curious : what event is this depicting?

I think that description is refering to the destruction of a human wagon. The first human wagon that came to my fort was destroyed, I don't know what happened since I was dealing with something else but when I came back to look the was a pile of items on the road and some dead merchants, mules and deer. My best guess is they ran into a deer and the wagon was destroyed. Also afterwards the soldier with them went on a killing spree and took out about a dozen deer before leaving. Free food and items.

What method do you use to ensure they decorate exactly that item?

I produced the master throne, then built a new forge and other buildings in a seperate room, built the throne in there and deconstructed it, They take the nearest usable item, if the nearest item has already had that decoration it is ignored. I had to lock the door and cancel the request a few times because of that. But hat is all there is to it. Make sure nothing else is around and they will use the closest item to the workshop. At least I think it is too the workshop. I flash conscripted a few times to keep them there.

They'll take the nearest item to *them* when they get the job order. Thus they could drag an item halfway across the fortress instead of using the one you put next to the workshop.
So you have to make sure that they're in or near the workshop when you issue the orders. Locking them in with only the piece you want them to work on will do the trick.

Platinum    40   Masterful    ื12   Statue      x25   Value   12000

Total      17600

It isn't worth as much as one might hope because so many of the decorations are of low quality. I don't know why this is. My jeweler is legendary after making an artifact, my metalsmith is grand master, and my craftsmaker who is competent at best made the best decorations. I couldn't find my good craftsmaker and I don't think he died. Is the quality of the gems determined when the gems are cut or when they are encrusted? Because a lot of the gems were cut before my jeweler went legendary, however the red diamond and all 3 glass were cut just prior to being added.

You don't need the economy to check the item's value.  You can take the item to the trade depot and with the Broker, the value is displayed by the object. I bet you could buy out the human caravans for the next few years (unfortunately you can't make deals that span for multiple years).

    Requirements
  • Trade Depot
  • A civilization to trade with
  • The Broker (it itself requires all the above)

My Queen rules from this:

I'm too lazy to count the decorations like you did, it has every gem type (except 1 or 2 of the super rare ones) every metal type, turtle shell and a ton of bones (including tentacle demon and frog demon). I could have added cave lobster shell, dragon bones, hydra bones and possibly some others but honestly I got sick of micromanaging it.

Total value is 30020 monies, which is pretty good considering it's not a statue.

There was a post showing off a sweet anvil awhile back...oh yes, this one. Truly epic, indeed.

That ... is an amazing throne.  Getting all those decorations using the right craftsdwarf on must have involved extremely careful micomanagement.

Did you put the throne in a room and lock the right dwarves in with it along with the raw materials, or did you have it hauled about between work sites?
