I played Atonement for a while but never really got sucked in like I did with Armageddon.  It has some absolutely wonderful features (those object variables make me drool), but I always struggled to get the same level of immersion from it and the combat system is a little too spammy/twinky for my tastes.  There were also quite a few little bugs and spelling errors in the game, although a lot of these have probably been fixed by now.  Out of curiosity, how much has the codebase changed since the zombie days?

Armageddon and Atonement are easily the two best MUDs for roleplay though, with SoI coming a rather distant third IMO.

Trying Armageddon first, quick question, you said that the T'zai Byn were basically the group for new players, but that they are mercs. Now since I want to be a crafter, will I not be able to join them? Or do they also do craft work? Just asking because I'm trying to figure out which starter guild to join.

It might be workable depending on the current sergeant/s.  Characters aren't generally though of as simply being rangers/warriors/merchants/whatever guild, but as people.  A mercenary who also makes them a few weapons on the cheap might be worth employing, but they're not going to get out of their combat training and they will likely still be expected to join in for contracts.

If you're dead set on playing a character who is primarily a craftsman (read: guild merchant) then one of the GMH (Great Merchant Houses) would probably suit you better.  I'm not sure which would be more active, but Kadius (clothing and furniture) or Salarr (weapons and armour) might be good bets for a first character.  As a side note, I'd recommend you make your first PC in Allanak.  It normally has the highest amount of players and is just generally cooler than Tuluk :D

I'm going to give a fighting character a try. If I enjoy myself, and decide to become a craftsman, I'll have said first character deleted (or atleast request it)

Storage can take a little while, but is virtually always accepted.  You could always take a crafty subguild if you wanna have your cake and eat it :)

I don't really like having multiple characters, but meh, maybe if I like the mud enough. Now I just need to wait to be accepted.

Quick question, the roleplay on these two muds, they're not like the "roleplay" you get in Iron Realms games is it? No offence to Iron Realms players.. But that's really just not roleplay.

Armageddon has a TON of actual roleplay, enforced heavily. I don't remember there even being an OOC chat there last time I checked it out. Atonement I believe is the same way, although I never tried it because it changed from 'awesome space ship unique theme' to 'every sci-fi MUD ever'.

Wayfar1444.com port 7777

EXTREMELY massive crafting system, skills that are learned via skill points but aren't just strictly 14 strength sort. The only issue is that it is a Hellcore MUSH, and thus lacks what is considered the normal RP of other MUSH's. Instead, you are somewhat expected to play a psychotic madman bent on killing everyone and trusting few, if any people, even those in your own corporation, but even that isn't enforced. Just don't go into any Hellcore game expecting to do any serious RP without A: Risking ridicule, or B: Learning the game and figuring out exactly how to go about it.

There is a serious difference in attitude on a hellcore MOO that can result in a bad experience for players coming from an IC required or more traditional RP game.  The best tip I can give here is to treat chatnet like a global or city wide chat on a graphical MMO.  If you ham it up someone miles away might happily take up an offensive against you, but if you ask a question about the game or mention the temperature in your area it will be much better received.  Players will treat you more seriously when coming across you in real time, especially if you are wearing the flash pants available in the mingle zone.

So that's the cons, for pro I'd say click crafting, combat, and spaceships.

Well, there my mush (when it opens) Navitas, which is RPI. Its based on the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Its PvP RP focus with social characters and support characters welcome and needed. It has a systemized RP dependent combat, player wealth (there a system for even hiring PCs, and getting PCs to owe a debt to you). Its an expanded an rehased version of the d20 wealth system really. There no real crafting per se. But if a player wanted to make unique items, I can work with that, and implement into the economy system.

Oh, playing multiple characters isn't allowed.  I meant that you could pick a combat focused guild (read: class) and a crafting focused subguild if you wanted to mix and match a little.

It's an entirely different kettle of fish.  Iron Realms games seem to be massive grindfests / text-based WoW, whereas roleplay is the entire point of RPI MUDs.

You can read a few logs over here if you're interested in doing so.
