Nice dragon name
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:05:48 pm »

Check out the name & title of the latest resident of my fort:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Does her title fit with her name, or what?

Most dragons I saw when adventuring, and their lairs too, had some jewels or fire in their names. It's probably because FIRE and WEALTH are defined as their spheres in the raws.

Of course, I'm a little nervous about having a war dragon around the fort. One, she could revert and become ‼FUN‼. And two, even if she's fighting on my side, I'd rather not have her breathing fire inside the fort.

I think I'll pasture her outside and also designate the pasture as a training zone so the trainers can keep her under control without bringing her inside.

Too bad dragons don't have the [CHILD] tag. If I add it to my saved raws, it won't apply to a pre-existing dragon, will it?

Any other advice for keeping a war dragon?

Keep her chained, not pastured.  Tamed dragons prefer not to flame enemies if they can close to melee range.  They will flame once or twice as they close in and then do regular attacks until someone punches their brains in.  Chaining her up at least prevents her from running straight at any enemies until they get close enough to her and punches her brains in.

Alternately, build a dragon pillbox, which will prevent it from ever coming into contact with the enemy.   There have been several threads on how to build them if you search around.  Pretty much like a flamethrower turret and the only reliable way to keep your war dragon alive.  Even if she manages to flame the first few squads during a siege, someone will dodge or avoid the flame and close in and get a lucky shot.  Not much is more depressing than having your 1000-year old war dragon killed by a single lucky shot to the head.

Also, yes, even tame dragons can be all kinds of !!incendiary fun!!.  One set the entire surface of my embark on fire.  Which wasn't terrible, since I was under siege at the time and it crispied up a couple squads as it spread and ultimately entrapped them behind a wall of flame.  But then the dwarven caravan arrived, and they got crispied up too...

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

I recommend an outdoor double-pillbox burner.

Enclose the regular pillbox in walls, pave the floors of the inner area. Restrain a poult/kitten/puppy inside outer layer to lure in enemies.

Goblins walk in, archers are within dragonfire range, everything cooks without burning all the lovely grass. Just remember to separate your inner pillbox from the gobbos with a moat, lest the gobbos walk up to the fortifications and put a bolt in its head.

Rinse, repeat. *Note* Puppy may need occasional replacement.
