Does DF have Tides?
« on: June 30, 2012, 02:55:38 am »

So this is my first ocean embark, and I see a large beach with driftwood in it and I was wondering should I take tides into account when building my fortress?

The ocean itself doesn't raise or lower in height, unless you drain it of course.

The main thing to be careful of is the waves. They can push creatures and items around causing disruption, and will deposit water into lower levels they can reach. If you build your fort on a higher level or wall off the sea, you'll be fine.

The nice thing is, the ocean will fill any moats you dig on the beach.

If you are in an extremely hot biome waves can be fun (might need to be modded to be extra hot though)

And there are no tides because dwarfs mined out the moon, since ores are running low. The new minecarts have proven a great leap (litterally) in the space race. Orbit has not been achieved yet, but that is no reason to stop trying

Driftwood is unobtainable, like surface boulders.

Just heading off that question.

The mist does nothing! Except conceal the critical hole where your wall defence is:D
