I THINK that somebody did some testing on this. And they found a way to fix it.
They did it by removing giant slugs from the game (If I remember correctly).
So yeah, trying to get a dwarf to drink is... not the most pleasant thing to be doing.

I vaguely recall that it was sea lampreys, not giant slugs. Could be both. I think it was something to do with sea lampreys extracting something from prey, and any civ with sea lampreys tamed had that liquid.

E:"If the sea lamprey's SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BLOOD tag is removed, I no longer have been getting the generic 'liquid' on the embark screens (playing as humans for testing). I tested on the same gen seeds throughout multiple trials."

"Also requires the removal of LEECHMAN's SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BLOOD tag (I had previously removed them from my game for testing and didn't realize it)."

It's the SUCK_BLOOD tag.

Wait yeah, I meant slugmen. It's close enough to leechmen.
So I'm guessing that upon attempting to suck blood they don't actually extract blood. It's just a "liquid" which is never actually seen in the process. That would make sense I suppose.

I just realized how often someone tries to get a Dwarf to drink known poison or mysterious liquids.

Maybe their livers really are used for something then.

They waste enough time drinking the way it is, they might as well be useful and do it in the name of !!SCIENCE!!

And if these random barrels of liquid aren't enough for a fort's needs, I've noticed that you can request Mountainhome send you more in the next caravan.  If you've used DFHack to fix the human merchants, you can bum some extra liquid off them too.

When it says "liquid barrels", who's to say it's not just a melted barrel?

"Oh man, it's hot out today, maybe we should bring in our trade goods..."
"Wimp! Get out there and roll in the sand until IT BURNS!!"
*melting barrel noise*
"GAAAAH WHY IS THAT MELTING"
"Quick, pack it up and sell it to the dwarves - they'll eat anything!"
