Peleron's Brilliant Rebirth [pseudo-roguelike CRPG]
« on: March 06, 2009, 10:51:28 am »

http://www.kolumbus.fi/topi_ylinen/peleron/

PBR key features(*):

-Traditional ascii-based bird's-eye view, turn-based engine, keyboard interface
-Build a party of 4 characters
-Easily move your party around (like in a single-character roguelike); use formations to let your strong fighters protect your weak spellcasters
-Over 40 starting classes with different sets of available skills; also a number of starting races with unique strengths and weaknesses
-Skill and level-based character development system: mold your characters by investing stat and skill advancement points, and improve your skills by training
-A complex magic system with 8 Realms of Magic (with elements such as rarity, difficulty, multi-realm spells, race/class restrictions etc.)
-Choose your path: become the champion of virtue with a Good party, or steal and plunder with an Evil party!
-Graduate your characters into awesome advanced classes such as an Archmage, the Grand Inquisitor, or the dread Harbinger of the Night
-Loose, non-linear plot; quests with random elements - quests can have different endings resulting in different storylines
-Explore an immense (and expanding) fantasy world, different locations with different landscape, different monsters, different NPCs, different objects, different quests etc.
-Different starting locations for the different PC races
-Freeware!

Note: This is the first public version, so it's a pre-alpha build.  [v0.105]

Curiosity from one who didn't open the link;

Is that an angband mod?

The author claims to have created Zangband, but this is supposed to be from scratch. I haven't downloaded yet.

Am I wrong in my way of thinking that a roguelike should never crash any computer? I've got XP in a virtual machine. Having a 2.8GHz P4 and 2.5GB of RAM (1GB set aside for the VM) should not hinder it in any way, yet I had to kill the process. Not the game's process. The VM.

I think it's just you getting a horrible crash / bug, Mephisto. My laptop can't DF worldgen, but can run PBR just fine.

Yep, I didn't had any crashes/lockups so far. Hm this game has potential, that's for sure, but the developer must work a lot on it in the future. [I've spotted like 6 bugs so far..] Let's hope that he will do so.  :)
PS.
The dev should host a forum or something...I hate to send emails in regard to bug reports.  :-X

Just saw this on TotR, trying it now.

Edit: Seems not to be compatible with Vista 64 bit..... Feel free to talk about how good it might be.  >:(

Yep, it isn't working on my x64 Vista at all, so I am playing it on my second laptop [WinXP]. Weird, I never had problems with running 32bit games on x64 before....

Anyone on the second level of the medium dungeon yet?

I've cleared every room, but gotten stuck on the puzzles. Explored part of the third floor (by falling), but decided it's too dangerous down there.

My game got buggered HARDCORE. I am going to wait until the dev releases a new version. I've emailed him about the bugs what I've found so far.

tahujdt gestures! The thread shudders and begins to move!

Can anyone direct me to a walkthrough for the Master Dungeon/Forge of chaos?
