Aw, the hard copy part was the entire appeal of it for me. Ah well.

My understanding is the e-book is updated as the game is updated, and the hard copy isn't updated after you buy it (for obvious reasons) but will always be the most up-to-date version available at the time of purchase.

Oh, if he's keeping the print version up to date then that alleviates some of my concerns with it.
