What's a program (Not FRAPs) good for recording gameplay?
« on: June 30, 2012, 11:36:59 am »

I used to record games like Dwarf Fortress and Angband and stuff and do commentary for YouTube. I quit a long time ago, but now I think I want to get back into it. The only issue for me was that when I recorded with FRAPs, it caused big performance drops on my computer and the videos it records take up huge amounts of space.
Are there any other programs out there that will record high quality video while not taking up tons of my hard drive or dropping FPS?

I've heard good things about http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/ but haven't any experience of my own.

Ooh, I just downloaded it and tried a test recording. Very nice, it has great quality, pause resume feature, volume control, and some editing tools if you want to pay. It also has this video rescaling feature, which is nice since my monitor is 1360x768 and YouTube plays videos in standard HD. The file was very small too, 7 Mb for a 3 minute video. It was just Caves of Qud being recorded, but regardless.

The only thing I don't like is that you're limited to 15 minute recordings at a time, which isn't a big deal, you can just start a new video and string them together in an editing program.

Overall it's a very nice program! I think I'll actually be using this over FRAPs, thank you very much!

Oh crap, never mind. It records the video and stuff just fine, but it adds a watermark and I can't record the actual in game audio for whatever reason. Oh well, anyone else know of another program?
