I'm been interested in it for a while and finally decided to dive in. What would a good starter joystick need for the game?

I'm interested in 1946 as I heard it is the best.

God DAMN I love this game!

Just ordered  a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick for IL-2 Sturmovik. Its a HOTAS setup (includes a throttle) looks like a great starter stick to me, i wasnt about to run out and and buy a 400 dollar HOTAS setup for my first one its only about 50 bucks. haven't received it yet so i cant attest to how good it is though the reviews seem good enough even though its not a "sim level" setup.

It really comes down to how much do you want to spend, i have friends that use the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog joystick which is a 400-500 dollar stick, and they love it.

I am considering to buy IL-2: 1946. The cheapest is $9.95 at GamersGate and I can get 15% discount on it too. Anyone knows where it is being sold cheaper?

Also Sdood, interested in playing together once I have my stick and the game? Please be aware only my experience in "flight sim" is from playing X2 The Threat and Independence Wars 2. :P

That's it, we need a thread for all things flight simulationy, including when we play. I ended up installing Rise of Flight too :) Should we do one under the "Play with your buddies" subforum or right here?

Also, I've had a T-flight setup (wasn't HOTAS) that I wasn't too happy about. I had had a Logitech Attack 3 before, and the resolution on my T-flight unit was worse. However, lots of people have a good opinion of it, so perhaps it was just faulty sensors.

The Warthog is a bit overpriced, especially if you already own some controllers but I only hear good things about it!

IL2 frequently goes on sale, so I would suggest you "demo" it for now, since there's no DRM or anything. The Steam summer sale should be coming along sometime soon as well :)

I got a physical copy of the game off Amazon for $10. Most download versions are at patch 4.09m as far as I know, so you'll always have to manually patch it to the current versions.

Yes, Anvilbuddy, I think we shall have a thread to cover flight sim major titles in Play with Your Buddies. I searched for the keyword "Sturmovik" in Other Games earlier today and noticed there were SO many mentions of it.

The Thrustmaster T.16000M is great. I bought it for il2 too and am using it for a few years now. :P Very accurate and plenty of buttons (which you'll need). Only thing that bothers me is the small stick for camera control (what is that thing called again?). It acts like a dpad which feels horrible. But other than that get it, well worth the money!
