Constant ringing sound in one ear
« on: June 24, 2012, 02:09:31 pm »

I took an extremely fast punch to the left ear and I hear a severe ringing sound. It gets more annoying while eating something because I hear that eating sound more louder. I can hear alright it's just a slight hearing loss but if there isn't any sound in the environment, the ringing sound gets severe. Anybody know some kind of a solution to that? Other than going to the hospital because that's not an option right now. I just hope it isn't permament or anything. If exposed to loud noises will it get worse?

Your temporal lobe was distended by the punch and you're about to die.

Just kidding, you have tinnitus. Odds are high that it will go away on its own.

A way to address tinnitus is to play some background noise. White noise will do. Music if that's your poison.

There's not much else to do I'm afraid.

You should still go to a hospital to make sure your eardrum is not damaged.

I think I ate away the inside of my left cheek. With my tongue, I can feel the parts of my cheek literally hanging. I gotta pull it out or something maybe. That was quite a punch. I couldn't do anything when I got stunned by the slap, punch or whatever. I didn't see it coming. I think his hand was cupped which explains the injury. When someone insults me, I just can't stop myself from returning the insult.

I didn't read anything about psychical impact in that wikipedia page though. I read about some guys' experience about getting slapped in the ear and I guess it will heal over time. No posts about a way to help the healing.

This didn't made me too happy though

Remember good old Thomas Edison and his hearing problem? Well, when he was a young boy around 10 or 12 he got hit in the ear very hard by his boss when he worked on the railroad. Thomas never heard anything out of that ear for the rest of his life.

I'm listening to songs because the humming sound is killing me. Well, I can hear a ringing sound at least.

If your ear was permanently deafened you'd know.

I would advise finding a way to get examined by a doctor as soon as possible, and would advise against pulling off bits of your living flesh.

To echo, seek a doctor, especially if the pain or hearing trouble worsens.  I also think pulling apart your own cheek to be inadvisable.

In the meantime, try gently holding a cold compress to your ear and cheek.  Bringing down swelling from the blow might help the ringing some.  Unless you're in really horrible pain, the eardrum is probably okay.  Tinnitus is pretty common after getting hit there, and most often goes away on its own.

Well, it turns out... Perforated (torn) eardrum. Should heal by itself unless an ear infection develops. All is well! It sucks that I can't swim until it heals though.

I was joking about pulling apart my flesh. I tend to make bad jokes that doesn't make sense when I get injured. It just tends get stuck in my teeth while I'm eating. I never thought a punch could rupture the inside of your cheek.

Yeah, you don't want an ear infection. I got them a lot when I was younger. Imagine someone repeatedly stabbing a syringe deep into your ear, beyond where you can reach. Constantly. For days.

That is what a middle ear infection feels like.

It happened to me too when I was young. That stabbing a syringe thing is totally true. It feels like it's inside of you head. I went to the doctor and got some antibiotics. It should be alright.

Just don't stop taking the antibiotics early. The last thing anyone needs is drug-resistant ear pathogens running around.

I'll hunt them down if I have to. I'm not going through an ear infection again.

It's not fun to loose most of your hearing in one ear to an ear infection!
