When villagers attack...
« on: June 16, 2012, 09:13:08 am »

I was sneaking - as usual - when I arrived in a hamlet and wanted to get a quest. But the first two villagers said they didn't want to talk to me. I suppose that should been a clue that I wasn't wanted there, because, suddenly, I was "spotted," and the roomful of villagers all attacked.

The weird thing is that my companions did nothing at all. They just ignored the whole thing, as I battled villager after villager. Is that normal?

Note that we hadn't killed any domestic animals, though my companions had attacked eagles, fish, and a hippo as we walked to the village (and my character joined them, once they made the first strike). But I wonder if my reputation was just too low? I had yet to accomplish a quest, since the first was a bandit camp just packed with archers, who wiped out my companions almost instantly, and the second was in a city sewer, which we hadn't entered yet.

Actually, in my first quest, I killed one of my own companions who was dying in agony. Really, I was just trying to put her out of her misery. (That bronze armor she was wearing was just a keepsake I kept in her memory.) So, did that do such a hit to my reputation that villagers want to kill me on sight?

It was kind of neat, anyway. But I was surprised that my companions didn't join the fight, one way or another (either with me or against me).

I am not qualified to reveal the peasants' motivation - I just wanted to say that you made me laugh.

You became an enemy of the entire civilization for being the one to kill her.

Thus, painful death was the only logical outcome.

I'll throw that on the signature pile. Quite good, that one q;

Civilizations in DF are super-hiveminds that can relay information incredibly quickly. One human diplomat can distribute the location of all the traps in your fortress to every soldier in the human army with a single glance. Killing a member of a civilization in the dead of night, with no one around will alert every man, woman, and child ,and they will stop at nothing to have your head.

The more you know.

Yeah, we were all alone in the wilderness. Even the bandits couldn't see us.

Then again, I did walk into town wearing her armor.   :D

Thanks, guys!

PS. I didn't even have the option to retire that character. Instead, he had to starve to death. (But maybe I could have gone to a different civilization? Oh, well, I didn't like him anyway. Is it just me, or are macemen rather worthless? I thought that morningstars were supposed to be good, but I didn't find it so.)

Note that the testing that showed that morningstars were awesome was done against human-sized targets.  Their contact area is low, which makes them great at stabbing, but their penetration depth is also low, so they may have trouble reaching the brains of anything much larger, and their low contact area will make them have trouble severing limbs.

Heh, heh. You're probably right!  My character was just a beginner, after all.

But when I start with a sword, I seem to have a lot better luck. I can chop off a weapon hand with no problem, or cripple a leg, so my enemy falls.

Later, a maceman might be pretty good, I don't know. Maybe there's a point where they become extremely effective. But my characters never last long enough to find out.  :D

Their contact area is low, which makes them great at stabbing, but their penetration depth is also low, so they may have trouble reaching the brains of anything much larger, and their low contact area will make them have trouble severing limbs.

I thought morningstars were a bashing weapon. I thought they might do additional stabbing damage (at low penetration, as you say), but that they primarily did blunt damage. Not so?

At any rate, I was only fighting human-sized targets. I had only just begun the game, after all. I hit the enemy often enough, but it seemed to take forever to do any damage. But maybe I just needed more experience.

Morningstars are unique in that they're [EDGED] weapons. But their contact/penetration depth make it so that the morningstar rarely ever penetrates armour - converting it into a blunt attack, causing horrendous amounts of damage to armoured and unarmoured targets. As long as they're humanoid sized creatures of course.
