Hey, if non-lethal combat is fully implemented in for tmode, we can have full fledged dwarven wrestling matches, without causing a loyalty cascade!

Things like apprehending can also become possible. So police work in cities and towns will become reality.

So... Who wants to be the first to have their Fortress Guard arrest a dragon?

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

I wonder what will be necessary for opponents to recognize lethal combat? Is all unarmed combat assumed to be nonlethal? Is hammer wielding lethal? what about a big lead crutch?
Funny, I just remembered when I tried out marksdwarfship, I would put my crossbow back in it's cave spider silk quiver whenever I was done shooting, and that'd be it. A reasonable guess would be to say that if you have an [ITEM_WEAPON] in your hand, you're attempting to be pretty lethal.
That might deped on personality. If you are able to hide it, or they can tell that you have a weapon but arent using it, They could change their tactics.

Human swordsman: YOU! WHAT ARE YOU HOLDING BEHIND YOUR BACK?!!
Stettat Luxurytaxes: Nothing...
left hand:
large silver dagger
copper boning knife
iron mace
<<bronze morningstar>>
☼steel battleaxe☼
!!xX☼pig tail fiber sock☼Xx!!

Human swordsman: Oh ok move along then.

This. Soooo much this. And Loud Whispers, that sounds perfectly normal for your average DF guard...

DF needs nonleathal combat, and a "Subdue" order would be really great. I can picture myself using modded spider-dwarf sherrifs to grab invaders and throw them into the transformation pits, where I use interactions to make them into tamable abominations for military use!
