Looking for suggestions
« on: June 15, 2012, 10:35:55 am »

I'm planning to do a redux of my old Skullcrusher Mountain story (see sig for link). This time I don't want to use vanilla though - I want to mod the game to include as many fun and interesting things as possible for maximum fun.

For those unfamiliar, the story will focus on the secret volcano lair of a mad scientist supervillain. The point will be to focus on the story, not overcome the usual game challenges. For this reason I definitely want to add in free materials reactions (all steel hallways!), lots of interesting creatures, plenty of extra ores and plants and such - basically just give myself the biggest possible selection for the story. I'd also like to add in possibilities for creating things in "labs" (whatever workshops I need to use). For example, the skin of one animal plus the meat of another creates either a new animal (if this is possible) or else at least some kind of strange statue.

The problem is, I have zero experience with modding. I don't even know how to create free reactions. And I don't want to spend too long preparing for this game and working on mods, or I'll lose my interest and the story will die before it starts. So can anyone recommend some pre-made mods (or very simple examples I can copy and slightly alter) to get me going? Also, any other suggestions for mad-scientist-type things to add that wouldn't be too complicated?

Thanks a lot guys! I hope I'll be able to repay any assistance with an interesting tale in the near future.

Oh, my science mod's reactions/materials section has lots of material-based reactions and every non-radioactive metal (except osmium >_>)!

Once I get REGEN:FE Alpha 3 up you will be able to alter beetles to essence beetles and give birth to essence in which you can shape into new creatures.

Thanks for the ideas so far. Putnam, do you have a list of specifically what is in your mod? I see general descriptions, but no list of content. I don't know if I want to make my world use electricity. I'd like lots of extra metals and things, but I think I want to keep the technology level medieval. You always see villains in modern or futuristic settings, but how often do you see a secret volcano lair constructed entirely using medieval technology?

Maybe I'll just start with one of the general mods - I think Dig Deeper is a good one with lots of materials, plants, creatures, etc. added to the game? Then I can go into the raws myself and change clothing names to create uniforms for my minions and add in free materials reactions? Although I guess I should create new clothing rather than just changing names, otherwise strangers will be visiting the lair wearing lab coats and goggles...

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to create a creature from raw materials at a workshop?

The electricity is a very small part--you really don't have to use it at all. It's just the reaction_power_science that involves electricity.

I'm not good with specific descriptions.

Meph has delved into topics like that, I believe. Unfortunately, the creature created seems to always only be 'friendly', and thus cannot be controlled and will not move. However, they will attack invaders.

That would be useful at least. I could always use DFHack to integrate it into the fortress somehow right? At least it would be worth a try. Or even just friendly monsters would be something. Do you maybe have a link to a thread on this topic? Thanks a lot!

One (theoretically) simple idea might be to change the genre of DF from fantasy. One that I've never seen is a western mod. Like, with goblin cattle-rustlers and elvish cowbiys (herding actual cows) and revolvers and...

Hm...I might have to take that idea, actually.

Acually Narhril started it afaik, Meph and a few others played with it. Same with me. It's a very clunky way and yes all that is made is a "Friendly" creature unless you have a syndrome to add OPPOSED_TO_LIFE and NOT_LIVING then you can make hostile creatrues.

I haven't jumped into too much other then making a evil giant rat that could power spawn evil little rats. Biggest mistake was embarking on a cave that had them as locals. Had fought off and lost several men to about 1000 rats in 1 year, with no end at sight.
