Yea, in future it would be a good idea to have your fortifications immediatley over or next to access points - enemies will path straight into your killing zone. Works well with traps to catch/disable/injure enemies, or to make them dodge into a zombiepit or suchlike.

You can carve constructed walls into fortifications last I checked, you just can't engrave them. Double and triple check that each has a quiver since they will no longer hold a fist full of ammo and shoot. Make sure the squad has a good number of bolts assigned and also try either canceling the station order or deactivate and reactivate the squad, sometimes I have to do that before mine will remember to run back and pick up ammo.

Build up a z-level. Construct fortifications along the entire wall, then station the marksdwarves on the next level up so they fire down on the goblins.

Though now that I think on it this might turn out to be impossible due to job cancellation as your civilian masons see the goblins while building walls.

Ok, I gave it a shot. This time I took down a few sections of my wall, and my marksdwarves took enough shots to kill ~10 of them. I think they started shooting through the fortifications too... *sigh* bugs. Their behavior is very inconsistent, but it worked, as a couple of the groups ran, leaving one squad left of 10 for my melee guys to clean up.

Fortress saved, and I have some.... willing participants for some experiments.
