Since you don't have any logs at all, the first caravan is going to have a ton of it. Buy all of it. It's 3 dwarfbucks per log, which is an awesome deal. Depending on what else the caravan brings, you may be able to buy an axe outright. If you can't, do this: It sounds like you have a pick, so get to some stone and build a Wood furnace ('b' > 'e' > 'w'). Burn 2 wood into charcoal (not ash!). Build a forge (you brought an anvil, right?) with stone, and you'll be able to make a copper axe out of those copper bars that you brought.

P.S. : Start pumping out some stone crafts and goblets. That'll get you some dwarfbucks to spend on the wood from the caravan.

I agree that if you have a pick you should just work on digging out your fortress and hold out till the first caravan. It's good practice for what to do if something happens to your only axe, and wood isn't that important after all since you can make stone pots instead of barrels and dwarves can deal with sleeping on the floor for a little while.

Also just as a note but the "embark carefully" option should always come with an axe, so unless you remove it you should always have one.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

nothing enemy like should happen in the first year, could happen in the 1st month of the 2nd year though, so you're safe.

As mentioned, you don't need that much wood in the beginning anyway, so it's no big deal. No pickaxe - that would be bad

Haha, nr. 1 is a bit tricky without proper gear.
Why, did you forget the pick and the anvil too? :P

I'm not sure whether it's a general lack of wood or an empty wood stockpile that prods the caravan into bringing lots of logs. I guess it wouldn't hurt to make a wood stockpile somewhere, even if you delete it before you buy any wood.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

In my experience caravan magic works slower, they'll see his lack of wood and bring some the next year. Shouldn't matter though, they usually bring a few axes. If not then you can wait for the hippie festival in spring.

It's true. Though watch out for undead/necromancer attacks. I've had 60-strong undead attacks in the first year. Necromancers don't care if they're kicking you while you're down.

my first zombie siege was 1st month after the first winter was over, didn't know if it'd be faster

It's a lack of non-forbidden wood. You can have large amounts of wood, but as long as you forbid it all before the caravan shows up at the edge of the map they will bring large amounts of wood. It's a trick that I use all of the time on my desert forts; mark when the caravan arrives, then forbid all of your wood the day or two before they show up and don't unforbid it until they arrive on the map.
