Site Finder Improvements

I'd like the site finder to be able to tell us exactly what soils, sands, stones, and minerals are visible from the surface of an embark area. It seems like if dwarven surveyors are so good that they can tell you whether there is a single or multiple metal ores deep underground at any given site, they should at least be able to tell us what's clearly visible from the surface. Then you could even tailor your search so you never waste time embarking on a site that lacks anything you want for that fort. Search: iron ore, gold etc. ore, sand would all be really useful.

I'd prefer it to be an option to toggle on and off.  Full disclosure would be more convenient, but not everybody wants to make it easier on themselves.

I think it also worked that way in some of the versions in 2010. Not sure why that changed. Toggle would be best though.
But in that case we might even go and add another option: Max info where you just get all mineral information, not onlu the first laryers.

Sure, but there's a time and labor cost for everything that Toady has to pay. He could go that far if he felt like it, but given the wealth of other information we're given when picking a site, I think an optional list of stuff visible from the surface is both highly useful and realistic (fits with what the game is basically saying dwarven surveyors catalog). An option to see everything would be useful for those who want it, but it's not realistic and a bit cheaty. It seems like Toady wanted to introduce some ambiguity in what you get at a site, which I support, but the surveyors should at least know the specifics of what's clearly visible on the surface, in my opinion.

I'd say just what can be seen from the surface, and what can be seen in a cliff, in case of mountains.

Anything that is visible from the surface or cliffs should be noted.  It seems silly to try and pick a site based on the very ambiguous term "volcanism", but not be able to know whats in the first few layers.  It might also not be that far fetched to list the layer types, like if there are sedimentary, metamorphic and what-not in the chosen embark.  Personally, I'm against the current amount of ambiguity.  Dwarven surveyors would spend quite a bit of time figuring out what they are getting into before investing resources trying to establish a new fortress.  That might mean that t use a bit of geological science to figure some non-visible things out.  And there is of course always the option of lowering the amount of clarity in your reports.  As it stands, its just so damn hard to find a site you want, which is definitely something that a newer player would be turned off by.  At the very least, the site finder should save it's info so you don't have to re-search the whole world everytime you want to try again.  Since you can't currently set up a rigid trade agreement where you get shipments of iron or flux or other industry items, its really hard to get around sites that lack certain things.
