Did it. They didn't notice me as long as I didn't bump in them, and the ones blocking the path could be laid to rest by stealth-throw kills.
Which makes it sometimes impossible to cross towers when stealthing. Zombie walls, zombies behind doors, zombies on stairs, behind hatches - EVEN ZOMBIES IN YOUR CEREAL!!!

Of course, Dwarf Fortress difficulty is subjective. What works for one will not work for another, and so on.
well no if you have a fast enough speed and a good ambush skill you just have to wait for them to make an opening, or just bring a companion and lure the zombies to him or her.

Mmhmm. Except when they're behind hatches. Or doors. Or on top of stairs. Or in your cereal.

Necros see you.
Chase you.
Resurrect all of the zombies you've killed in the previous level.
Or since you ambushed there, they're not even dead.
You're now swarmed by two swarms with no way out.
Throwing < Many many necros, protected by zombie meat shields

Take a mine cart ride out of the necro if your cover gets blown, or lure them out of the area then sneak your way into the tower again. or get lucky with the rng and find the first book on the first floor while sneaking. Wait isn't this the thread for bogeyman advice?

I always take the newly redeceased outside and throw them off into the distance after clearing out a floor. Can't reraise what isn't there.

Plus it helps build throwing skill, which is one of the easier ways to clear out a tower. The zombies are often so densely packed that even a miss on one will usually strike something (the Necromancer if you're lucky) and they're fairly easy to kill with a single hit.

This. I just snuck in throwing rocks with a brand new adventurer. Killed 11 of the necromancers and 103 zombies. Snuck in, grabbed the book that had the right kinda title, and snuck out. I'll read it after I actually play for a bit and do some attribute leveling.

Or you can just do this, and remove any difficulty from necro towers :\

I play solo throughout my adventures (except for undead minions if I go necro).  Bogeyman management is all about planning your trips.  Learn exactly how far you can walk in a day on your largest map (usually 4 or 5 tiles, depending on how fast you move) and hop from safe spot to safe spot.  Safespots are the lairs, mountains, and beaches already mentioned, but deserts and wastelands work as well.  You can walk during the night or sleep outside.  It's not a good idea to go more than a day without sleep though, as I'm pretty sure drowsiness penalizes your skill rolls, and you need them to be high.

When sleeping outside, keep in mind that even if bogeyman won't get you, bandits or packs of predators can still do so.  However, you can hide from them by sheltering yourself in the terrain.  Start looking for a slope when you think you'll need to sleep soon.  One z level of height is all you need, and probably ideal.  Find a narrow, one-tile wide gully, preferably one that bends sharply so the end can't be seen from the entrance.  A dry pond or depression will also work if it's less than 3x3.  Sleep in the tightest, most well-hidden low spot you can find, and everything should pass you by in the night.  Even if an ambush happens, chances are good that you'll still be out of sight and able to hide as soon as you're awakened, and then make your escape or turn the tables on your attackers.

If there is no bogeyman-free terrain between you and your destination, you can still make it.  People suggest walls of campfires, but they're not reliable, and I never use them.  I've seen bogeymen walk right through campfire checkerboards and navigate around all sorts of convolutions and bottlenecks to get through my fire walls, so I doubt the claim that they won't approach within one tile.  If they catch you sleeping, you'll be stunned for the first turns, and as a result your skill rolls may be too low to save you.  If I'm in bogeyman country, any sleeping I do is during the day only (in gullies as above), and I travel at night.

The safest but most boring method of lasting the night is to wait in a gully for the bogeymen to show up, and then sneak away from them, but not so far that they vanish and reappear nearby.  This is something like 10 or 20 tiles.  Then, just pace back and forth or in circles until the sun rises, or mash "." (but you really should pace so you at least increase your ambush skill).

On the other hand, if you want to be the badass ranger that fears neither dark nor wild, then continue sneaking towards your destination, but keep in mind that every 15 steps or so, the bogeymen will teleport to the front and sides of you, so take it slow, and get used to backtracking and veering in random directions.  Patience is essential here; the night will last a long time when moving like this.  Bogeymen will often spot even a Great or Master ambusher within two tiles, and once they spot you you'll be fighting them until morning or (more likely) until they overwhelm you.

Good luck, and may you teach the night to fear you right back.

There's two options.

1. Sleep inside, in mountains, in beaches or with companions. It's best way to survive. Do not give bogeymen chance to attack you.

2. Fight back. Yeah, with skilled and good-equipped adventurter it's clearly possible to kill even large horde of bogeymen.
You need good slashing weapon, like axe. Also you need good armor sand shield. Set your (C)ombat preferences to charge. Because bogeymen are very small, charging at thme will be effective. And lastly, aim always for lower body. One hit to lower body kills bogeymen.
Also, throwing is good way to fight. And try fight against one bogeyman at time.

Where's the fun in that?

I like to play outsiders, and shun the company of others- so I'm often confronted with bogeymen while poorly armed, alone, and far from cover.

If you're faster than they are, you can kite them. If you're not faster than they are, drop things until you are.  Don't attempt to hold your ground.  Don't run too far, or new bogeymen will spawn.

Throw things at them until they're dangerously close- this will rarely score a kill, but you might knock some down and slow their advance.  If one moves into melee range, after one of your throws, but the others are still further away, charge the one closest to you.  They'll usually dodge out of the way, but sometimes you get a hit, and usually the copper spear is more effective than throwing rocks (although it exposes you to greater danger).  If you're feeling bold, you can just isolate the bogeymen and melee them like that, without the rocks.  Be sure to move out of melee range before the lone bogey's friends catch up.  Wash, rinse, repeat.

If you get injured, or if you're getting tired, find a hilly area.  You can sometimes break line of sight by scrambling into a ditch- and that will allow you to start sneaking.  This is harder than with most enemies, since they're fliers, but it's still totally doable.  Once you're in hiding, move carefully towards a safe zone.  Also, animals can save your life.  Bogeymen will fight with other creatures, too, so if you're in a marsh- look for alligators!  They'll mess the bogeymen up real good, and you can just play the vulture.

EDIT:  Just for fun, I just killed a pack of bogeymen with my adventurer- armed with a basic copper spear, a turkey feather shield, and a partial suit of sea otter fur armor.  Didn't bother with the throwing- just stabbed the pricks to death.  No serious injuries.
