« on: January 07, 2013, 04:34:07 am »

I was searching on google after fortresses people made  :P, and I noticed that almost every map was looking like this it turned out that you could get that pre-made map on an old dwarf fortress tutorial site called something like lendemaindeville, or something like that, I just wanna know if you can download the map from somewhere or if you guys have it, I really wanna try out this awsome looking pre-made fortress mode map. :D

First, your image link's broken.

Second, once I found what it was, you're looking at the old 2D version.

The most stable version of that one is still available on the Bay12 website. You want v0.23.130.23a.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/older_versions.html

Be aware it's a steep learning curve and much more unforgiving. Farming is a brutal affair that will probably result in you flooding your fortress a half dozen times before you get it right. The dwarf AI is a lot worse and they tend to take breaks, wander around and need booze and food more often. Very little work gets done quickly. Also the interface has no nice new features like sorting building material by distance etc. And the military training with weapons will usually result in them brutally murdering each other more often than not.

As for the specific game you want, wasn't able to find it sorry.

But still, it's good to get an idea of what the game used to be like. However I doubt you'll stick with it over the current version for long. The "lendemaindeville" you want was actually the old wiki website, but got changed awhile back.

Ah, I see your problem, you think the map in the picture is a special site.

Can you dig up or down in your current version? Because that's the 3D version. 2D is v0.23.130.23a and every version before it.

In the 2D versions, EVERY map is the same. When you start, you can only dig east. Then you hit the cave river. When you cross that, you hit the chasm. When you cross that, you hit the magma flow. When you cross that, you hit the pits, and then it's game over.

Every single map has these features on it no matter where you embark in these versions. Just download v0.23.130.23a, generate a world and start a fort and you'll get that map at your first site.

PS: Right click images, copy the image URL and paste it into the IMG tags to share pictures. It's also considered good manners to spoiler images in order to avoid affecting screen resolutions for those with smaller monitors.

Just to point out the obvious semantical conflict here:

You're two talking about different kinds of 2d and 3d.  Rendering versus game architecture.

They are not all exactly the same, but they have similar features.

What is different:  Outside trees (pine or broad-leaf) will change based on what biome you are in, as will local wildlife.  you could be in a desert or on a glacier, in some places the river will freeze in winter and in others it will not.  Good environments have faeries and things, evil ones have monsters or zombie wildlife.

What is the same: I think you always have an outside river, even in the desert.  On a glacier it will be permanently frozen, but you can channel it out (i think?) or shoot holes in the ice with a catapult.  You always have a cliff, cave river, chasm, magma, etc -- all roughly at the same depth, but with some variation.  those features will be in different shapes, sometimes the river will wind different ways and have different forks and waterfalls.  same with the chasm, etc.

Sometimes you have river and chasm civilizations, and sometimes not.  I think in the most recent 2D versions, those things were bugged and they never appeared.

I know for a fact that the outdoor river does not appear in certain biomes, and I'm pretty sure you can't channel through ice (and catapults wouldn't do anything to it either). If you started an outdoor fire, however, that could certainly melt the outdoor river.

Sometimes you have river and chasm civilizations, and sometimes not.  I think in the most recent 2D versions, those things were bugged and they never appeared.
They aren't actual civilizations, just (infinite) populations of randomly selected creatures - the way they're chosen, it's possible to get multiple types of animal people or none at all, but they definitely show up.

Because you used the wrong URL. ImageShack gives you explicit markup for embedding images, but you didn't use it.
Incidentally, that particular image is none other than the legendary Boatmurdered. If you look closely, you can see Unknowing's "Sanctus Serimon" and Cross Quantum's "statue statue" and "elephant pump".

[edit]

Also, if you're going to be playing 23a, I would highly recommend that you apply these binary patches to fix some of the major bugs and improve the game in assorted ways (with the added bonus of making it possible to use my DFHack port with it).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
