I was just thinking of just walling up my fort when I meant "Cutting my ties with the outside world..."

Would that not work?
Caravans would still spawn, as would diplomats, as would ambushes and sieges. You'd probably get human sieges eventually from them getting pissed that you were letting the goblins wipe out their caravans and diplomats, and as more and more of these foreigners killed each other, you'd have ever-more dead creatures and items for the computer to track, reducing your FPS. So it would work, but not in an ideal fashion.

Drawbridging the map edges isn't as much work as it seems, though; you actually need fewer materials and jobs to do it than simply making a wall, because a 10-long bridge takes 3 blocks and 1-3 mechanisms (depending on whether you build a lever for each or one lever for several, and whether you deconstruct the lever afterwards or not) to build and raise, 1 job to build, and 2+ jobs to link and pull the lever. A 10-long wall, in comparison, takes 10 materials and jobs. It's just that drawbridges take somewhat more management to build, which isn't really a problem.

Yup that seems logical. Here's my final question: This is my no-migrant fort and I have limited dwarfpower (12 adults and 1 child as of yet) What defenses could I take against an ambush that could come when somebody is linking or building that bridge?

Every dwarf is crucial in this fort. My legendary architect/mason is even more so...

As mentioned above, merchants will still appear and bimble around pointlessly even if you don't build a depot.  This may not matter to you, but there can be downsides: goblin ambushes may kill them and litter the map with their goods, potentially lowering FPS.  Worse still, if you embarked somewhere where the dead walk the merchants will be attacked by zombies and eventually reanimated.  After a couple of years your map is teeming with zombie merchants and your FPS will plummet.

If you want to have an isolated fort without liaisons and caravans appearing, you can do some simple modding.  There's a thread about preventing merchant deaths in an isolationist fort.

Thx a lot. Don't know if I'll mod it though. But I like having the choice.
