Preventing catsplosion
« on: May 29, 2012, 01:58:28 am »

Let's be brief here:
We don't have a massive group of cats and dogs because we prevent them from breeding.

I say that male pet cats should be available for castration to prevent catsplosion.

This should also be available for dogs as well, but of course, not birds.

I know this might be a bit hard to do, but it's the only way to stop them.

You may be able to do this with a custom interaction and syndrome; they can add the [STERILE] tag.

That said, I must say that I find this discussion even darker than the overall tone of the game.

It should be pretty easy to mod in game even now. But will require a bit of micromanagement. Pasture animals you want to make sterile near a workshop which makes a boulder bursting into a cloud of syndrome making everyone except for dwarfs sterile. Micromanagement is to keep other anumal from going near it.

There was a thread on this last month, so let me save Footkerchief some time, here...

This was a dev item under the old system:
Quote from: dev_single
# Req509, CASTRATING ANIMALS, (Future): Dwarves should be able to castrate male animals. Spaying female animals might be beyond the ability of dwarves to do reliably.

It also came up in DF Talk:
Quote from: DF Talk 2 Teaser transcript
Rainseeker:   [2]So are you going to have cones for the critters, and pet critters?
Toady:   I don't know what people did, there's all kind of stuff ... we're going to be castrating critters sometime because people did that, I guess they just tied a string around it and just cinched it so tight that everything just died in there; so there's no open wound so you don't really have to worry about the cone, because the main thing is is he going to break open his incisions; that's why we were worried about Scamps; and he would, the way he's tearing and biting and scratching and chewing, what are you doing?

And it's been frequently suggested:

I also pointed out that dwarven medicine was capable of removing infected/necrotic flesh and then sewing patients back up, so neutering a female didn't seem beyond the realm of possibility by comparison.
