The wiki says I can put pressure plates on top of tracks. If a minecart rolls over it, does it activate it?

first: yes, they do, as was announced in several devlogs

the wiki on minecarts doesn't go out and say so, except in one line:

The capacity in a minecart affects whether a pressure plate triggers or not, based on the pressure plate's setting.

You can set pressure plates to react to minecarts on tracks and (presumably) nothing else.

So I can have a minecart automatically open and close a door? Or lower and raise a bridge, just by rolling through a pressure plate?

Yes. This being DF, however, things are never that simple. The pressure plate will immediately send an "open" signal to a door or hatch, but there will be a ~100 tick delay before an "open" signal is sent to a floodgate or a "close" signal is sent to a bridge. The reverse signal will be sent after the plate is disengaged, with an additional 100 tick delay in each case. I think.

How long is 100 ticks? I know it will depend on my FPS... so how many tiles would a cart travel during that time?
Well actually I'll test that out myself.

You say that the door will then close after the pressure plate is released?

So something this simple is not going to really work?

Code: [Select]

==[]=BBB=[]==
B being the bridge and the [] being the pressure plate.

Depends on the speed of the cart. The average dwarf travels 10 steps in 100 ticks, with more agile dwarves traveling more and less agile dwarves travelling less.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
