Long patrol duty
« on: May 27, 2012, 03:51:01 am »

My marksdwarfes get negative thoughts like "was angered by long patrol duty lately". What does this mean? There is no patrol sheduled for them, only training.... And if i lower the training number they get negative thoughts from being relieved from duty (yes, they are peasants, was the only use i could see for them...)

That negative thought happens to all military dwarves as long as they are not yet elite. What counts is the time on duty. If they were peasant earlier it is probably better to keep them on duty all the time and give them a nice living room and other things, to neutralize the 'depressed/angered/enraged by long patrol duty' thoughts.

I usually train peasants in some trade. The best use of peasant is in my opinion that you increase your chance to get artifact armour/weapons by training them to armourers/weaponsmiths.

The easiest way to solve this is turning them into pump operators. Build some pumps in a room, let them pump air till they are legendary+5. Quickly trained, doesn't waste valuable resources (even stone is precious now with nerfed mining rates), and most importantly increases their attributes quite well. Not agility, though, but the ones they need (thoughness, endurance) when they get shot/hit. And even more importantly it doesn't take away mood potential.

Note: they pump until they get negative thoughts from hunger and thirst. Don't try with very unhappy recruits.

If you're not averse to using danger rooms, sticking your dwarves in there until they're legendary in shield user or armor user tends to help a lot. Danger rooms are also a quick way to train your military, period, anyway. Very useful.

You need to train a weapon skill past Novice to stop them whining about the draft every time the squad is activated, and past Great to make them stay happy to be active military forever. And exotic weapons don't count.
