Trying to reclaim a fortress.
« on: May 26, 2012, 02:38:25 am »

So I had this fortress which was pretty awesome (mediocre really) and I've tried to reclaim it a couple of times but their are goblins and humans ambushing my guys. I've tried beefing up my embark profile with weapons and armor and novice axe and crossbow but they still get their asses kicked by like the first goblin....damn. Any body have a lot of experience reclaiming a fortress have any pointerz?

I have some experience reclaiming forts, but never have I had to fend off massive goblins sieges while waiting. What does your old fort have in terms of defence (traps?) and workshops (mechanic's workshop?)?

It's cut into a hillside with a moat and bridge setup and fortifications , but there are creatures inside the fort lying in wait when I reclaim.

I have never succeeded in reclaiming a fortress lost to enemies with the normal embark, which is all we get for reclaims in 34.x.  In 40d the size of the reclaim team was proportional to the difficulty of the situation, and the team was automatically trained in military skills, but that is not the case now.  I have therefore begun generating my worlds with 10,000 embark points.  For normal embarks I still use the same profile as I did with the normal embark points, but in the case that I ever need to reclaim, I will have enough points to give the seven reclaim Dwarves military skills, full equipment, and war dog support all at the same time.  I have not yet tried reclaiming with the higher embark points, so I don't know if even that much is enough.

Hmmm.. that will make things harder. I haven't had to reclaim under those circumstances so far, but I could suggest that you make an entirely new fort next door, wall your dwarves away from the original (and now overrun fort), and then train up to defeat those goblins.

you can't change the max embark points after a world is generated can you ? I have never tried. Alas I'm afraid my fortress is lost for now..

Possibly some kind of hex editor could edit an uncompacted save, but I have never tried that.  I do know how you feel.  I had a very nice fortress that I lost to something not at all related to the three Forgotten Beasts who had infested it when I tried to return.  They had been walled securely into their caverns, but apparently they got a free pass on reclaim.

Seven hammerDwarves with copper warhammers and wooden shields, towing whatever you have behind you with wardogs. Tried just digging yourself a proxy fort to recuperate, build a migrant army and retake the main fort?

only 3 years in and had my ass handed to me by a massive siege..... Which is strange because I hadn't even started a metal industry yet. I think they may have been after my vampire manager, I went into legends and he had over 1000 kills. I'll look for the gamelog and upload it for you guys to check out.

if it's a reclaim a lot of your old fort wealth counts too, leading to kind of overactive ambushes and sieges

What I generally do when I lose a fort to sieges or ambushes is to send in a few adventurers to clear the place out before reclaiming.
