I just got ambushed by a bunch of goblins, so I feel like having my story here.

My world is currently ~ 4 years old, with a population of 57.

I spent the early years of the fortress just preparing, I wanted to do something original and fun long lasting. My game almost became fun when a giantess came about a year in. I had one axedwarf, and he was barely trained.

He had a wife who was under a fey mood, and I figured she was a goner anyway. So I saw this giant and thought "hey, i'll let her fight the giant."

She got to the giant, and took a blow the ripped off her left arm.

--Backing up.

The axe dwarf is married to this woman, and he could see her get her arm messed up.

So what does he do?

He pulls the trigger to drop the bridge, at which point i fully expected fun to set in.  But no! He runs at the giant! His wife, with her dying breath, grapples the giants neck. Her husband?

He takes an axe he's barely trained with, and FUCKING CUTS THE GIANT IN HALF.

The giant falls to the ground, and crushes his berserk wife.

He starts tantrumming, and runs back to base. Eventually he calms down, and goes back to life, raising his kid to become my second best warrior.

Fast forward a day year later. My axedwarf is outside with his son, building a windmill (Theyre both architecture-ists. The mom was employed as one and it keeps them from getting sad), when --yet again-- tragedy strikes.

There was an ambush, and i wish I'd gotten it on video. It was absolutely amazing. The son was unarmed, and got BEHIND his dad, the axedwarf.

His dad takes out 4 of the 5 goblins, slicing them all into bits, before succumbing to a suckerpunch sword through the head.

The son doesn't take it too lightly. He grapples the goblin, gouges its eyes out, rips its legs off, and then goes back to his dads corpse.

The goblin was still alive, mind you. So I did what anyone would do. I put the goblin in a cage to keep it from dieing, and I put it out front of my kingdom.

I knew the son was going to go insane -- after watching his mom and dad both die. I dug a deep pit (started with a 8x3, ended with a 3x3) and got him into it, then floored up so it was a cliff. It's still outside (I channeled from the outside, so he wouldnt go blind), and I give him food and free kills all the time... not that he takes them.

His emotions have been sitting at 0 for almost two years now, and he hasn't gone psycho yet. Nothing I do will cheer him up, he just sits down in the pit, eats and drinks, and remenisces.

He also had some mild engraving skills, so I figured I'd put those to world, one tile every half a year he stayed alive. Most of them were bullshitty, "the kingdoms embark" sort of shit, or "militia captain dethroned".

But one? One was a picture of the giantess cut in two, with a beautiful sun that had his mom and dad in it shining above.

He has a 3x3 space, and he almost never leaves the tile infront of that. Some people might say its pathfinding in the game.... But I think he's thinking about how to make his parents proud, and how he has to not go insane to make them proud.

Anyway, I'll update with more stories as soon as I have them. This is a live fortress, so it should be worth-while.

(I'm allowed to double post.. right?)

Just had my third dwarf die. I built a well in my barracks because I thought it'd be a good idea...until dumbass mcdumby decided to jump into it. He fell 3 z-levels down and drowned. No one else seemed to notice either, which is really nice! No tantrum spirals here!

Have you considered carving out a full set of rooms for him (bedroom, dining room, throne room, armory, tomb) and releasing him? That way, he should find plenty to be happy about.

I did. I kind-of dont want to though. I want to see if he can last until I have some *fun*.

Also I just got a human caravan and came under siege at the same time. Time to try out my traps and shit!

Double edit:

Killed the siege. I trapped 10/15 goblins and killed the rest, then killed the trapped ones.

Lost an axedwarf and a baby. And everyone loved the baby. I'm about to get a tantrum spiral.

Triple edit:

Remember how I said the retard fell down the well and died?

Yeah. He's haunting everyone. I run runesmith in the background for mood tracking (since there's no easy way to figure out how everyones feeling) and one of my original 7 dwarves has been as happy as if he'd been smoking some weed mixed with antidepressants alongside his copious amounts of alcohol dwarven strength potions.

Oh and by the way, he has no friends besides the dead ghost, as far as I remember.
