assigning items
« on: May 24, 2012, 07:25:14 pm »

Is there any way I can assign a specific item to a specific dwarf? I brought some weapons and shields with me on embark and they are just sitting in the wagon.

The dwarfs in question are novice-level in the appropriate weapon and shield skills. I just don't know how to make them pick them up.

Appoint a 'militia commander' (just use one of the soldiers, it really doesn't affect anything who takes this position) from the nobles screen, and create a squad from the military menu. Make a uniform with the weapon/shield or whatever you want, and assign it to the squad from the equip screen. Then go into 'alerts', and set the squad to active/training.

...lovely military system, isn't it?

Thanks so much! I see how it works now. I am surprised you can't assign specific items to dwarves like you can war animals.

Also I'm not sure if this is a bug, but using the uniform menu I can't assign the battle axe that my woodcutter is holding to him as his weapon?

Yeah, woodcutters and miners have conflicting 'civilian' uniforms, that you can't modify. This'll cause problems if you only have one of the items, or you want them to switch quickly between military or civilian duties. Try making a weapon stockpile and disabling his woodcutting skill. If you want to customize individual dwarves, a uniform doesn't have to be used, as specific weapons and weapon materials can be assigned manually, from the equip screen.

Alright a few more questions on armor stacking - I read the armor page on the wiki, and I want to make sure I understand size and permit values correctly.

If I wanted to equip a dwarf's body with the maximum amount of pig tail clothing I possibly could, I would try this:

6 pig tail dresses - each pig tail dress has a size of 10, and the top pig tail dress has a permit of 50, allowing 5 dresses underneath it.
3 pig tail robes - each robe has a size of 20. The top robe has a permit of 100. 60 size from the dresses, and 40 size from the other 2 robes.
3 pig tail cloaks - each cloak has a size of 15. the top cloak has a permit of 150. 60 size from the dresses, 60 size from the 3 robes, 30 size from the other 2 cloaks, totaling 150 size underneath.

Am I counting this right? Also, will a male dwarf even wear a dress?

How does 12 layers of pig-tail clothing compare to 1 copper breastplate protection-wise?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm still trying to figure all this out.

dwarfs wear whatever. The only difference between male and female is that females sometimes drop babies, no other gender specific roles exist. In that I think they are a bit like discworld dwarfs.

If you have a breastplate, layer that with the pig tail stuff and it's better than just the pig tails. Small note; some things 'spread'. A breastplate only protects the upper body. chain shirts also protect throat, upper arms and lower body and yes, you can wear a breastplate over a chain shirt over a dress, and a cloak over that all.

I usually don't bother maximizing layers - it's a bit strange to imagine someone wearing 6 cloaks - and with the clothing degrading you'll be running a very big clothing industry if you get a big militia
