Extinct Civ?
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:48:42 am »

Hi, there.

I'm just playing my first world and on my first serious attempt to build a fortress. Having !FUN! 'cause i'm getting no migrents nor did the dwarfen caravan showup.

I've looked up in the legends mode and have found out that i'm part of a dwarf civ who gets/got beaten up regulary by a gob civ. My civ doesn't have a king/queen or any other vip's. Could it be that my civ is extinct? And my starting 7 are the last of there kind?

Yes, they are dead, Jim.
Well, you better start a dwarf breeding program. Any tips on getting the starting seven to have... fun as fast as possible?

However, you should get migrants and caravans anyway.  At least, I did, when I tried playing an extinct civ.

Not after the first two waves, I think.

Its sure going to be intresting, if the civ is dead :D

Well, it seems like it's time to get the candles out, and hope they are all happy enough for some bedroom activities.

Thanks for the fast replys.

All I can say is that when I tried it, I got all of the usual stuff except that every Dwarf was an unmarried nobody related to no one because there were no historical figures to send.  I got a caravan, and then I got waves of the regular size.  I gave it up because I had wanted an isolated fortress.

How about you abandon and restart? Dwarves from your old fort will become historical figures eligible for immigration, at least in theory.

I wasn't thinking about abandoning the fortress soon. I see it as a challange and will give it a try.  I'm getting caravans from other civs now, but still no migrants.

But i'll try your idea with my copy save, and see if it helps. :)

You probably ought to try to automate stuff as much as possible... don't do with dwarf power what you could do with a water reactor and/or simple repeater.  Give your dwarfs idle time to work on those social skills so they can become cool and attractive people, and form relationships.  It might help to have your meeting area be rather small so when they're idling, they're close together, nobody off to one side sulking alone.

If no dwarf is expendable you can't really afford to have a military, and some of the nastier stuff is trapavoid, so you probably should redesign your entrance to be able to seal up completely.  Remember fliers exist and put a roof on it.  Be sure you can perpetually supply things like clothes when you lock down... you don't want to die of internal insanity while hiding from external hostility.

They died for their fellow Dwarves. They will be remembered, at least until your Dwarves see a particularly nice statue.

Your civ may not have died at all, sorry to burst your bubble. If your on a landmass that is not connected to the mountainhomes, then migrants/caravans will be unable to reach you, even if you civ is alive and well. Since you have lready embarked, it will be hard to know if werever you embarked was seperated from the mountainshomes. Next time, try to choose a civ that is close to were you are embarking.

Though its still a challenge to populate said "new continent"

Of course i might be completly wrong, im just throwing out another possibility. Considering your world is past the year 3000 (hauly bauls), its quite probable that it died out at some point.

Having no leaders is a strong clue that the civ is extinct.

This is wrong. Migrants and the dwarf caravan will still arrive even if you are in a deserted island. If migrants are not arriving it's because there are no dwarves to chose from.
