Dumping vs... what
« on: May 17, 2012, 12:30:13 pm »

This is probably more a philosophical question.  It came to mind after mine-carts and wheelbarrows were released.

Argh, I've been dumping all the stone that's left over after excavating a room for so long now I think I forgot or never knew what was originally intended.  What's the "right" way to get rid of stone (versus d-b-d dumping into a quantum garbage tile and then d-b-c)?

As I write this, I think I know the answer.  Is it:  create a stone stockpile somewhere and then Urist McAnyDwarf will clean up the mess automatically?

Yup.  Although the stockpile will fill up very quickly (one stone per tile) and there's no way to guarantee that it'll be the stones you want (as opposed to another, nearer stone of the same type) that'll be moved there.

Haven't installed the new hauling release yet, so don't know how that might affect the above.

with the new hauling release it is possible to define per stockpile what stones you want, assign a stockpile to a workshop(and if you have a manager, a specific level of dwarf). also, the remaining stones after excavating are drasticaly reduced.(IMHO too hard)

You always could define what stones you wanted in a stone stockpile, except for the clay which is now fixed.  The new part is being able to force a workshop to take stone from a stockpile with the stone that you want it to use.  So for instance, I am getting all the furniture made from rock salt and all the rock pots made from phylite, and nothing made of orthoclase.

The "proper" way to do things was probably intended to be to either just leave the stones where they lay for most areas and to dump them into a permanent-destruction area for those stones blocking stockpiles. Remember that in the earliest versions of the game, there was always a bottomless chasm in the mountain between the cave river and the magma river; this was likely intended to be where your refuse went (AFAIK the only "dump" order you could give just tossed things in there, too). The introduction of z-levels screwed this up, though, as there was no good way to make chasms like that. Back in 40d, they still existed, but were uncommon - one per region tile, but only in mountain biomes - but the caverns made their implementation impossible.

The short of it, though, is that you're "supposed" to dump the stones and not reclaim them. If they're just tossed into a midden heap and left there, it's not an exploit like quantum stockpiles are is the idea.

Less-wasteful solutions are to have an army of low-skill masons set up churning out stone blocks, which can be put in stockpile bins, and then used for construction.
