Although it made me think of DF at first glance too, it's far more likely they're both just alluding to the same source: the mines of moria

For those of you that aren't familiar enough with LOTR:  The dwarves in Moria dug "too deep" for Mithril and released a Balrog.

Which in this case happened to be fifty feet tall and made of fire.

Too Deep:  The classic Dwarven way to go!

Yeah, the words Tycho used are almost verbatim from (the book) Fellowship of the Ring.

ah, how quickly i forget the source.  and when i describe the game to people, i usually tell them "imagine you are creating moria starting with seven dwarfs and a pick".

The Penny Arcade forums are how I found out about Dwarf Fortress. I'm sure Tycho has played enough to find the underground base fascinating.

What if Tycho is among us now...watching...with those demon possessed eyes...oh my god...he could be any one of us...

Could be Gabe too I hear he gets into rpg fits now and then.

Am I the only one that notices that the spellchecher comes up with Psycho for Tycho?

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Tycho never reads the PA forums, so if he found out about DF it wasn't from our thread there.

A "deep crow" flying mega beast definitely needs to be in the game... what a cool idea for a monster.  The PA site has done a lot to help promote the game, so it would be a nice tribute to them to put this in.   :)

Read the blog post; the strip was inspired by an actual ebay auction, and the wording was taken from LOTR. From there it's easy to say that they probably just drew on standard fantasy tropes for the rest.
