I need more advice with my tabletop rpg project
« on: May 09, 2012, 07:37:13 pm »

I'm trying to design a tabletop rpg, but I don't have too much experience with them. As in the only tabletop rpgs that I know the rules to is dnd 4th edition, and Brickwars which that doesn't really help with what I'm doing. Mostly what I'm asking is for some examples and suggestions on how to handle combat and leveling up and proficiencys and rolls for more generic actions and stuff like that. Please tell me if I need to specify more.

I think you're going to have to be more exact, because

Sounds like you're asking for basically everything.

Give us something to work off of - what do you have down?

Please tell me if I need to specify more.

You need to specify more.

Try asking questions. It will be easier for us to answer specific questions than to throw things at you until you see something you like.

Suggestion: play more games. See what you like. Odds are good that most or all of the game concepts you'll want to use have already been implemented. It will be easier to pick and choose amongst them than to try to create everything on your own from scratch.

...leveling up...

Without seeing more it's hard to offer much advice, but I'd suggest you check your goals right away, just after reading that.  Who says you even need levels anyway?

What is your target audience and setting?  General purpose?  Dungeon Fantasy?

Answering that question will fundamentally change how you go about approaching this.

Why do you want us to design the the rpg system for you?

Why do you want level system?

Have you read any essay or article on it?

Have you tried to simply modify a currently existing system for something else?

Have you figure out what your game wants to give players?
