Accidently Stole

Like the title says, I think I accidentally stole something since no one (so far) will talk to me. I've searched the wiki and all over, but couldn't find much. Is there any way to get them to talk again, or do I just have to go to a different civilization?

Nobody in that civ will associate with you if you steal something; thief is a permanent stain on your character.
