Proteus is a game of pure exploration and discovery, developed by Ed Key with a reactive ambient soundtrack by David Kanaga.

I came across this "game" recently while browsing some indy gameplay videos on youtube. Proteus is one of those "different" games with no real goal or point other then to explore the island on which you find yourself stranded. The visuals are very basic pixel art, but somehow it captivates me. The audio is, as said, reactive. What is going around you will change what music will fill your ears.

After playing it myself, I'd say Proteus is one of those games where you look at it and say "How did they do so much with so little?".

A let's play video showing off what Proteus is like...

And the website for the game.

The game is currently is Beta, but the developer himself was kind enough to give us the Alpha to try out. Be aware that playing the alpha might detract from the overall experience of the much more refined Beta version, but it is something if you honestly don't have the money to buy the game with.

Stuff like things make me ask why big development studios can't be as creative as this...

Because they can almost always break even with a shitty cover based shooter.

My gut tells me never to trust games where a description of soundtrack takes more than a third of the entire description.

And 'lo, my fears were justified - it's not even a game.

I've spent the last few days picking up some more information on this game, and am adding it onto the OP.

Also, the website now has a Forum. This is awesome!

Lastly, part of what I am adding to the OP is the last alpha version. The game is currently in beta. He is allowing people to test out this to see what the game is like, but know that it can detract from the overall experience of the finished product.

Edit: Decided I'd just completely redo the OP.

This actually looks pretty cool. Are they adding to it? I may consider picking it up if they do. An exploration game actually sounds pretty good, although I'd agree 'game' might be an ill-fitting description for such a product. Simulation is probably a better term. 'Game' implies more interaction with the environment.

Despite that, this looks awesome.

Apparently there is new content being added periodically. This looks really neat, might pick it up at some point.
