This should be implemented for all dirt to an extent. I don't think that you should be able to simply make a tunnel in dirt, it doesn't work in real life, you'll get it collapsing if you don't have any supports. Dirt should be able to make columns that are 2 blocks high.

You don't need supports the length of a sapping tunnel. Only the cavern under the walls would require it. So dwarves could dig a narrow tunnel without supports. Wider open spaces would require supports, but that's true of stone too. It's just that dirt rooms have to be much smaller.
