Sadly, though the ponds on the top of the plateau freezes in winter, the lower bodies of water do not freeze.  They are freshwater; I know this because I tapped into the big river for my well, but they don't freeze.  This means that the wonderful obsidian-capped volcano is not so easily accessed as digging through ice.
