Dwarven blood.
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:14:00 am »

Dwarven blood should be alcoholic.
Think about it. Dwarfs drink alcohol from as soon as they can reach it. Before that If you assume dwarven breast milk is alcoholic.
Dwarfs drink alcohol the same way most drink water. How do they do this without dropping dead?
Answer, dwarfs don't get drunk as there body harnesses the ethanol for energy.
And by the same token, this is the reason dwarfs become lethargic when they go without. That is to say, the alcohol becomes deluded and/or depleted.

...

I cant help wonder if this were implemented if it would lead to cannibalism/auto-cannibalism.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

The concentration of alcohol in an alcoholic's blood is tiny.  Far less than 1%.  Maybe around 0.2%.

Right now, even changing dwarven blood to 100% alcohol does not help alcohol_dependent vampires.

Humans also harness the alcohol for energy (it has about the same energy density as carbohydrates, 4 kilocalories per gram), but that has no effect on whether it makes us drunk.

Alcoholics don't generally gradually lose the ability to move if they don't chug a fifth of a barrel of booze.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Toady has said that alcohol has different effects on dwarves than it does on humans. It might not be in the game yet, but it eventually will.

Well, adult dwarves are about 60 kg.  If a dwarf were to chug about 50 liters or beer, its blood might be 5% alcohol.  The effects of alcohol on dwarves aren't relevant in this context.

Of course, it's a fantasy game, so there's no reason it has to be realistic.
