So I just read my story.
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:37:41 am »

So I've been writing a short story, it's going to probably be around 15 pages long. For 7 1/2 of them it was lighthearted, full of amusing situations, zany characters. Then I wrote about a 12 year old girl getting verbally & physically abused by her sister, to the point of a mental breakdown. The weird thing is that I can't delete those pages, because the fit so perfectly with the story, even if it's not what I originally intended. I have written other short stories that build her sister up to be an believably bitchy whore, and I would have had to show that at some point. I might have gone a little to far, but I needed the girl to be vulnerable and wanting of affection enough for the story to advance.

I should drink and write more.

I don't see a problem.

Unless there's a specific tone you're going for? If so, it's a matter of writing skill to get the conflict across without swerving into unintended directions (and also to determine if the unintended direction is actually better than what you first wanted).

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I guess it's not so much a problem, It's just that some of the things I wrote border on the sadistic. It may attract a different audience than I am used too.
