Magma pressure can be created by running magma through a screw pump and functions virtually identical to water pressure, albeit moving a bit slower. Magma is not pressurized by simply having magma above it without running it through a pump, such as when you tap into the side of a volcano.

I once built a fort to empty an entire volcano almost anywhere in the map that I chose to. See:

I built the pumpstack inside the volcano, from the surface to the magma sea. It could fire constantly until the entire volcano was drained.

I'm thinking of topping that by firing the entire magma sea all at once using multiple stacks.

Someone else did some science on tick order, and found that pump stacks are faster if built from the top downwards.
