CHALLANGE! SKY FORTRESS!
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:37:45 pm »

*wistles and walks into the thread, laying down a simple drawing of a floating, dwarf populated castle*

A simple suggestion: Using the Supports bug, attatch yourself to the ceiling of the sky/embark, and build a totaly hanging, self sufficient fortress (if this has been fixed, then long elaborate and above all thin supports to the map edges are acceptable, so long as their are supports between solid contact and the fortress). Meanwhile under it, dig down like a open cast mine untill you reach the magma sea. figure out a way to get as much candy as possible, seal the fortress off and unleash the clown cart. Wait and survive in the fort as the monstrosity fly about causing havok and eventualy get killed eather via dwarven bolts or other visitors to the map.

Access to the fortress from the ground must be via a long chain of retractable bridges.  If you can build a pump stack to bring water up and drop it into a resevour hang out then that is acceptable. -since youll need to make muddy rock via magma and water pumps, this is kind of needed-

when the clowns are dead, you have nobles and monarchy with family lines to continue their dynastys, post the save on the forms and claim 2012 Dwarf fortress victory.

Bonus points: wait untill the minecart release, have a minor settlement on ground level and fire minecarts up and down to transport goods instead of having a bridge.
Bonus points: Make the fortress in the sky symetrical
Bonus points: Do this in as hostile an area as possible (aquifers counts as hostile since youll need a hell of alot of stone for this)

This is just a challange for folks who havent got anything better to do this summer or have been wondering what they should do next. :) Good luck.

Name: Project Skyoshock.
I'd do it myself, but I plan on my first megaproject being Rapture. (The city, not the event.)

Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

If the City underwater is called Rapture, should the City in the sky be called Apocolypse?

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

For posterity's sake, please describe the support bug.

It treats the top of the map as support. So you can build a pillar on the top z-level, remove the connections to the ground, and it will stay put.

So I've heard, but I've also seen this to work straight down only.  If you build a 3x3 floor, and build a support atop the center, then cut it off from the surface, you end up with a 1x1 chunk falling down and a 3x3 hollow piece falling.

This is an awesome idea! Even if the fort can only be a single z-level off the roof of the world.

Bonus points if you make bomb bays, maybe? I've always wanted to use orbital bombardment on the goblins...

See what happens if you build a wall.

Funny thing, I'm going to work on the next edition of my Sky-Fortress series when the minecart release comes around. With my original project, I used the [CAVE-INS:OFF] technique to build. It's good to do that if you want a bit of a head start, I suppose. Just remember you have everything secure before turning it back on.

Best of luck to you on this. With what I have in mind, the difference of craft is similar to the Bahamut compared to the Shiva in Final Fantasy XII.

IIRC you now want to jump minecarts into and out of the floating ship, so it won't need a dock and can just float there with cave-ins turned off?

The dock will still be used for a trade depot, but if it's past last-call to board the ship, you can always catapult yourself onto the ship while simultaneously loading another drop-pod into the loading dock.

One of many other unnecessarily dorfy features aboard the BloodAxe.

EDIT:
Just looked back at the original megaproject. Holy crap, 2 years since I finished it. 2 3/4 since it was started. Time flew by.

Instead of having it attached to the roof of the game map, have it attached to the ground via a 3D Chain...

question:

Would building multiple supports remedy the constructions dropping? Ie over all the surface of were the fort attatches to the sky. And does this drop also occur when its a natural stone -ie obsidian- floor attatched to the support?
