Forced to talk to someone annoying.
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:59:22 pm »

Just a funny detail I noticed. I don't have the foggiest idea what social skills do.. In one fort I gave all my starting dwarves the "conversationalist" skill to cozy the place up a bit. Later I noticed that all my immigrants had "been forced to talk to someone annoying lately". :P Awesome.

When Dwarves forge a Grudge, talking to that grudge PISSES THEM OFF.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Usually I see a pattern, I'll do little test embarks where I plop down just to see if it's a zombie biome or an ogre biome, for instance.  About a month after embark certain subtleties become clear:

He has been forced to talk to someone annoying lately.
She has been forced to talk to someone annoying lately.
She has enjoyed a conversation lately.
She has been forced to talk to someone annoying lately.
He has been forced to talk to someone annoying lately.
He has been forced to talk to someone annoying lately.
She has been forced to talk to someone annoying lately.

And just like real life, they take it out on everyone else when they tantrum.

Isn't life wonderful?

And just like real life, they take it out on everyone else when they tantrum plot hurtful, elaborate revenge.

Isn't life wonderful?

I prefer my option.

It's just a shame dwarves aren't smart enough to do that yet...

Nono, revenge is a totally acceptable solution imo. It actually does something about the problem, rather than useless complaints, rants, and eventual tantruming I associate most people with.

Arranging an "unfortunate accident" (or two...) helps ensure the problem doesn't happen again, and everyone lives happily ever after. :)

That would be a brilliant little addition though. Maybe with the personality rewrite we'll start to see dorfs hauling the pets of rivals to the butcher shop, stealing their clothes out of their bedroom and leaving a rotten puppy heart in the enemy's cabinet.

I'm also waiting for the day I can i - designate a dueling zone and build a Thunderdome.

Why did I just imagine a kobold on top of a bronze collosus as "master blaster"?

Couldn't you do that by plopping them all down in a desert and getting them to tantrum?

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Desert isn't so bad... very few are completely lifeless and devoid of moisture.

The kind shown in road warrior and thunderdome is a rocky hardpan with clay. This means there are microbes and that there is deep subsoil moisture. (In the case of those movies, it was AU salt desert, IIRC. These have water, just very saline water)

With some work, (and lack of alternatives) the area could have been made quite livable, if perilous.

Some container gardens, solar stills, and some know-how, and that desert looks more and more inviting.

The real problem in road warrior and thunderdome were the phyrric scavenger packs and thugs. Typical that its the humans that are the real problem.

Grudges aren't actually bad at all, when they die they give happy thoughts to all!
