Is magma deeper down now?
« on: April 12, 2012, 03:51:27 pm »

I used to  find magma about 100 levels below the surface, but now I am occasionally finding it as low as 200levels below! Is this new, or can I change worldgen settings or something?

depends on your embark. If you're at high altitude it can be very deep down.

It depends how long ago your talking; the only major change I believe was from 40d to 2010, with the addition of the caverns; this remained the same in 2012 I believe. The caverns make magma a lot lower, since they effectively add more underground layers to deal with. If you want to get magma higher, removing cavern layers will do the trick I believe; don't remove them all though, or you'll have no underground plants. You can also fiddle the 'z-levels above layer 1' options and the like in the world gen parameters, but I think they default to the minimum anyway. Lastly, I believe lower elevation embarks help; one of my current forts is by an ocean, with ground level as 90-something; candy is down at 70, and magma is a little below that.

Last version can have varying magma levels. I have a standard game embark on a 0-height plains and have magma sea at 28 (with all 3 cave systems crammed in between 8-26). Other tiime i had magma at 100+ when embarking in a mountainous area.

in my forts so far magma is usually around z level -20 but above ground varies between z-level 100 to z-level 150, depending on whether the embark is close to the ocean coast or farther inland

I hit magma once 6 levels down, and one other fort was 130 levels down.  It just varies.

Embark Altitude is what effects this...

My average embark, it's down in the lower 20's, a couple times as far down as negative Zs.

The a few dilerberately low altitude (and flat) embarks, it was about z50-60 with the bottom of of the map in the 40s.

Ground level itself always seems to be around 110-130.

But, someone with better sciencing could nail the numbers down harder.

Last fort had a nice magma pool at the very first cavern level, which itself was probably only about 15-20 levels down. It was a very convenient location compared to where I typically find magma.

Nice name, btw.

If you're embarking somewhere with an altitude above 0, yeah...  magma can be really deep down.

Twiddling with worldgen settings for volcanism can get you magma pools in the first or second cavern layer if you're lucky.

My current map is only 52 levels deep (+15 sky). I set worldgen to generate only 1 cave.
My magma is only 25 z-levels below the surface. It's awesome.
Only thing that seems missing with a 1-cave gen are nether caps. I do have all other trees AFAIK

It may depend on luck, and spending some time searching for a good site - my first embark in v.034 with default worldgen parameters (mineral occurence set to frequent) gave me magma pool at cavern level (some -20 zlevels), 33k of gold, 9k of iron, 13k of nickel, 3k of galena plus countless tin ore, copper ore, marble and traces of aluminium and bismuth. Also, heavy forestation on surface, with black sand layer for style. Surface is on level 141, but there are also negative z-levels.

I found a magma pipe about 7 levels below surface last week, it was fun ( but too easy )
