This is where it's first mentioned. I did the same basic thing, when the caravan comes the dwarf won't show up as "T" and if you order it to the depot they'll pick it up, drop it, and release the captive.

that's what I thought. They pick it up, even if it's just for a moment, to store it in the depot. So no go.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Hm, well, yeah. Probably a surprise to no one that trading dwarves is hard.

I tried experimenting with various exotic solutions such as impeding dwarves from grabbing the cage by imprisoning them somewhere. It didn't work. It also appears I triggered a minor bug that froze 2 wagons in the middle of my trade depot when a cage with a dwarven child in it fell on top of them.

Furthermore, they wouldn't even trade for a corpse of a berserk dwarven child (I would have had a live berserk dwarven child to trade at their expected time in Sandstone damnit but the caravan insisted on only showing up at the very start of winter). The dwarf still took it out of the cage, even though it no longer had the friendly dwarf icon.

Well, at least I learned a few things. The easiest way to cage your dwarven children for a zoo is by far building a small walled area of cage traps and dropping a floor next to them. Also in the tantrum spiral that this caused I learned that a dwarf can be caught forever in the "starting a fist fight" stage if he tries to fight a dwarf that's gone insane. And you can end the fist fight by assigning him to a burrow.

To be tested: can you sell a weregopher lyemaker if the caravan shows up at full moon? Hopefully by someone else.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.
