The children won't gather the plants though :|

Children can still catch and eat cave spiders, though. And then be caught and eaten by giant cave spiders. It's the dwarven circle of life.

Do children build farms?  I know they will work on them, so you could theoretically have a farm in the caverns for them to feed from.

They'll harvest, but that's it. They won't plant, haul food, or anything else.

Dying (ceasing to be alive) is also not a Moodable skill. Even totally unskilled Dwarves seem to do it correctly.

No, but they do harvest plants from farms. So theoretically you could chuck the children down the caverns, and if one survives to peasant hood the children could carve a slightly less health-risky lifestyle.

Quote
The spinning microcline rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the +mussel shell+ exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, saying nothing, with no time for even a grunt, travelled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. The rock bounded twice and was lost in the tunnel tubes. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across that square, red rock at the base of the cliff. His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy's arms and legs twitched a bit, like a crundle's after it has been killed. Then the underground sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone.

This time the silence was complete. Ralph's lips formed a word but no sound came.

Suddenly Jack bounded out from the tribe and began screaming wildly.

"See? See? That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you any more! The +mussel shell+ is gone —"

He ran forward, stooping.

"I'm expedition leader!"
