The only material I can think of that can be harvested without tools is clay.

Pen/pasture the initial grass munchers on a single tile so they rapidly eat it all, exposing the naked clay.

Harvest and store in a stone stockpile.

Make adobe *everythings*, and hope for the best.
I didn't even think of that.  At least TWO ways to survive!

You'd have to embark on a volcano whose rim happened to be exposed to the air at just the right height, but that would work, meagerly.

That was not the plan I had in mind though.

Wait actually no, clay wouldn't work, because you need magma safe stone to make the magma kiln.  Unless you have trees, which means you may as well make barrels, etc.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Clay boulders can be turned into "stone pots".

:D

As for magma safeness, only important if using magma.

Also, clay can be used for 'unfortunate accidents' for invaders with a fallaway ceiling.

Clever engineering, and you wouldn't need weapons.

Um, so the point is "You're not allowed to do anything"? How is that a challenge?

Don't they not hold liquid, though, unless fired?  Meaning you couldn't brew drinks.

Anyway, my solution is pretty obnoxious and obscure, so I'll stop being an asshat and just say, hehe.

1) Embark on an embark location that has a cave tile, which leads down to the caverns without having to dig.
2) Build a carpenter's shop with wagon wood.
3) Build a training axe or two.
4) Go down to the aforementioned cavern, and harvest some blood thorns, which grow without cave water.  As many as you'd like.
5) Gather surface plants (which are allowed, just a "no TREE biome") for food, farms, and distillable things.
6) make barrels and drinks and whatever else.  You can also make walls and doors, etc. for defense out of wood.  If clay boulders can indeed be used like stone, then you could even make mechanisms and bridges and whatever else? (Or can you only make pots out of them?)  Either way, you can not only survive, but have a renewable wood resource you can make crafts out of and sell to build up exported wealth and fortress wealth.

Extraordinarily dull, but possible.

Yeah like I said obnoxious.  I wasn't really expecting anybody to take it very seriously. >.>

Ah, see, clay is still a new thing for me.  I took a turn in a no-picks allowed succession game, and despite there being several areas on the surface with exposed clay floor tiles, none were valid clay collection sites.  Is it possible to collect clay from the surface?  (I know this can be done with sand)

no means to procure more wood or stone
False.

So what do you mean by "NO starting equipment?"  I was under the impression that meant only 7 dwarves, their clothes, two random pack animals, and a wagon.
Correct.

No surface trees.  No caravan stealing, no trading, no dead caravan item procuring.  Additional wood must then come from underground.  This requires picks.  No starting picks.  No means to make picks.  Cannot acquire picks or materials from traders.  Then... wait for a migrant to bring a pick?  And until then, enjoy having 1 log for a building and 2 logs for barrels?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Clay's harvestability is defined in the raws, like sand.

"Silty clay", "sandy clay", "clay loam' etc cannot be harvested in vanilla. (Which is dumb, because *all* earthenware is "silty clay", or "sandy clay". You process it by making slip in a slip pan, letting the sand/silt fall out, then drying the slip. Tada! Pure clay!)

You need "clay", or "fireclay".

You only need a single tile. It will produce endless amounts.
