Spoilerific artefact
« on: April 13, 2012, 04:18:46 pm »

My mason got moody and made and artefact, a coffin with two scenes. One of the scenes depicts ascension of my current king to the throne, some 40 years earlier. The scene names the king as "vampire dwarf". I have never seen a vampire in fortress mode, let alone a king, so this invokes a couple of questions:

1. Is being a vampire legal? If not, how come dwarves of my tribe tolerate such a being on their throne? If some backwater mason knows the fact, then everyone should know that.

2. If this king comes to my fortress, is there any use for him? Other than making the coffin useful...

3. How loyal are the military from his entourage? I suppose they don't care who is their boss privately. But will they attack me if I attack the king? If they are vampires too, then my dwarves might find themselves in a grave danger. I have about 140 dwarves now, and no vampires amongst them.

1. Tyrant who hasn't been overthrown. Oh you want a new king? Well he has a cult. And the several thousand people who demanded a new king died of natural causes two days later.
2. Yup. Vampire King. Every year, feed him the mayor. It's the only way.
3. You won't be able to attack the King. His entourage won't go apeshit crazy either, so there's nothing stopping you from freeing your people.

1. I'm not sure whether its against the law to be a vampire or not.  Murder is against the law, though, and vampire ALWAYS do that, so they do always end up being criminals.  Of course, since dwarves have an absolute monarchy, the king IS the law, so he can never be punished for his (probably numerous) murders as far as I know.

2. Is there EVER any use for a king?  You could just keep him locked up somewhere.  Vampires never eat or drink or age, so if you wall him in his own little room, your fortress will last forever... or at least until a murderous ghost kills him...  You could have him pull levers or something for you while he's in there.

3. As soon as they enter the map, the dwarves in the kings entourage are *your* dwarves.  So if you somehow got the king to be your enemy, then you could order his entourage to attack him just fine.

Thanks, I have a clear situation now. By attacking I meant provoking the king somehow. I don't know if this would be easy or no, but I believe it is possible. I didn't know kings are non-punishable (usually the kings of my civs have been long dead before my embark).
