Dwarf Fortress DF Mode Tutorial
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:19:56 am »

I've been playing DF for a few years, on and off, but none of my friends have been able to get into it, until I offered to run a tutorial for them to get them up to speed with the absolute basics of the game (Pretty much a live version of the "Quickstart Guide").

And I recorded it.

Reddit thread here details a bit of what happened, how it happened, and links to the videos:

I've also got my original raw stream, and will probably be doing at least a second tutorial on the basics of strip mining, military, and maybe touching on HFS and other ways to have "Fun".

If anyone is interested in joining in with either the second tutorial, or thinks learning DF off a complete stranger sounds like a bit of fun and wants me to do another one, just let me know, and i can send through details. I'm either Mallakyte or Malachite pretty much everywhere.

I think it'd be pretty cool to help new people get into DF. Any chance I could help a bit with the second tutorial?

Absolutely, i'll let you know what the details are of the next stream, however in that I live in Australia, i hope 8-12:00PM Adelaide time (By the website clock, 6:30AM-10:30AM) is convenient for you.

If that time doesn't suit you, i'd recommend setting something up here, in the DF forums, and generate some interest and run your own tutorial. I'm happy to help advertise it through my channels, and on my website (http://www.c4nt.net), and i'll help you get started with the ins-and-outs of web streaming, if this is new to you too.

6:30-10:10AM by the website? That's about 4:30-8:30AM where I am. Sorry, I don't think that'll work for me. :P
Yeah, I haven't really done any streaming at all, but I think I'll actually do a video or two to put up on youtube. Really unfortunate about the time stuff, that happens a lot to me since I live in Washington State. :P

Yeah I figured as much ;) About now is perfect! :D

Anyone have any ideas on Tutorial 2? I'm thinking advanced economy (Trading, Management, Nobles, Supercrafting), basic military and basic defence (Traps, bridges, etc).

Nice idea, and using a texture pack was a very good touch for not driving newcomers away with the raw ASCII style.

May I suggest you to speak a bit more slowly however? it's sometime difficult to understand for non native english speakers ;)

Yeah I thought so too - It did cause a few issues with special characters in words, and the question "So why are there lots of buried coffins?" at least twice, but i still think it was for the best.

As far as talking slower - i know :) In my job I do a lot of educating, and the number one feedback i get every time is that I need to learn to slow the hell down. I quite often have someone intentionally in the room that is a colleague of me that gives me a hand signal when this happens. Obviously, this is a bit more difficult when doing an online tute :)

Cheers for the feedback!
