A couple of questions
« on: April 12, 2012, 11:21:12 am »

I've done some significant exploratory mining, but so far the only ore I have found is gold (well, and some gems). I marked metal bars way up in the first caravan, but after a massive migrant wave of 47 people, I'm getting perilously close to 80 population with minimal military. Should I craft gold and then trade it for other metals, or is that just asking for an invasion? It doesn't help that kobolds are exporting "death" to me.

The second thing is that my expedition leader and legendary miner took up my mason's workshop and is screaming about bones. I've slaughtered a horse and I think he carted its bones off, does that mean I need more bones? I only have a yak and a lamb left - had to slaughter a donkey for a five year old legendary bone maker (ah, realism).

This is my first real game, so do bear with me here. I'm stuck on the "smelt steel" part of the quickstart guide - heaps of lignate, absolutely no iron or flux whatsoever.

only gold is pretty rare, there is usually some copper somewhere. Making lots of gold stuff will attract sieges rather fast.

And yes, he'll likely want more bones. Try breeding dogs and slaughter puppies. Dogs breed and grow very fast so they are actually a viable food source.

My advice is a cheat engine, dfhack. It lets you "prospect all" which will tell you if there are different metals on the map and broadly how deep, but not where. It also has the command of "showmood" that will inform you what a mood requires and how much of it.

It has more functions, some of them really cheating, but you don't HAVE to use them.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

And then everyone melted.
