Large amount of relatives
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:42:14 pm »

So I started playing DF again due to the updates and I read about how vampires migrate to your fortress sometimes. I saw that relative numbers can be a good sign, and one of my dwarves has 49 relatives, most of which are not at the fort. I THINK this map only had a short pre-generated history so he could just be a historical figure or something, but it seems an intensely large amount of relatives for my first ingame year.
ps: why am I getting a birth every 2 minutes
pps: possibly related, my fort is at 80 dwarves at the start of the second year, I could of sworn this is way too high
ppps: The "possible vampire" just went melancholy and died of thirst due to being unable to complete his artifact, does this mean he was innocent after all?

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)

Migrants are historical, so they come married. Marriage = love. Love = babies.

Your civ probably has a ton of people, so they come in swarms.

Another wave of 33 migrants. This is starting to get stupid >_>
edit: an entire wave of 6 migrants from early on have yet to lose the ecstatic level of over 300, despite the other dwarves being at normal levels (ie, Either average or pissed). There some reason for this?

Each wave may bring new relatives of the dwarves in the former waves, so this is like an unending family reunion. And dwarves probably like such reunions. Some of my dwarves can't be made "fine", not to mention "unhappy" even by successful babysnatchers. And yes, they breed faster than rabbits. You may want to decrease pop cap, because surely there will be many pregnancies going when you hit the cap, and you'll end getting bigger population than expected.

I haven't met a dwarven vampire yet, but single, not-vampire dwarves can come with a relatively long list of relatives (like 50 or so) and these relatives will come in time. This also makes science experiments on new migrants potentially dangerous - they are already family or friends with your more valued members...

I plan on locating the children in an easily accessed area for baby snatchers, they have already been very helpful so far and I want to avoid the snatchers being caught

on the children:

before, migrants needed time to socialize before children were born, now they get to the fort already married and start pumping out babies from day 1.

in data/init there is d_init. Right below the popcap is a childcap. I've set it so that there can only be 1 child per 4 adults and never more than 30. This wasn't needed in previous releases since people getting married was rare enough.

I use similar values. I call it "half-a-child policy" (not to be confused with "halve-a-child policy", a more benign implementation of "quarter-a-child" one).

Lucky guy... My migrants usually come with 3 or 4 useless brats on their wake...

I already had 3 underage legendary stonecrafters due to moods, and one of those grabbed the mayor seat as soon as he grown up thanks to all the chatering he's done with his brothers... At least he like slabs.

Now, I have a strict chineese-like one child policy.
"So, welcome to TrialParched, you, your wife and your 5 childrens... Any relative around? only a cousin... mmmh... Can you all wait in the waiting lobby for a short while please? Yes, the one with the floor looking like a bridge and the strange zombi-like moanings coming from below..."

Well, as i said earlier, my mayor like slabs.

Just had a giant parrot eat about 10 of the kids so that should help even things out for a while, plan on using them as troll bait when I explore the caverns eventually.

Marriage = love. Love = babies.

I have a problem with your logic, i love ice cream but i am neither married to it nor have procreated with it.
Similarly I have married a harlot and have no intention or loving or reproducing with such a beast
