empty cages not empty?
« on: April 08, 2012, 01:20:45 pm »

this has been bothering me for a while, but i often buy empty cages from merchants, and in my current fort, i have 13 cages, which contain *something*, so i cant use them
but when i build them, they show no contents i can unassign from them?

building the cage and hooking it up to a lever, then pulling, does not dump the *something* out of the cage

is there some way i can properly empty them, so i can use them, or do i just need to sell them because they are broken somehow?

If you buy a cage with vermin in it, it doesn't show it in the trading screen.

Happens with elves all the time.

building the cage and releasing via a lever should dump the tame small animal out of the cage in theory, not sure why it isn't with yours.

If you don't feel the desire to build a small animal trap to put the vermin in, I usually just construct a 2nd cage nearby and select the tame vermin to be moved to that cage (you don't have to construct the cage with the vermin in it either, the dwarves will pull the vermin out from your cage stockpiles)... Once a dwarf grabs the vermin and begins hauling it to the 2nd cage, just go back into the assign screen for the cage your moving it to and unselect the vermin... Your dwarf will abandon the vermin (and a cat will quickly turn it into a corpse) and your cage will be free of vermin to use (preferably to cage the elves who sold you a cage with a "tame lizard" in it.

Caravans sometimes bring dead animals.  I'm not sure if that is because they passed through a region where the animal froze to death, or what.  Cages containing corpses will not show up on the cage-placement selection screen as containing anything.  You have to build the cage and examine it closely, and dump the dead animal.  Remember to recover the corpse from the garbage dump before it rots.

Apparently empty barrels from the caravans sometimes contain frozen liquids, too, by the way.

That's from taming animals - dwarves feed animals to tame them, and if they feed them plants, you get seeds back just like if it was a dwarf doing the eating, except that the seeds are in the cage.

Building the cage and designating the seeds for dumping may work (this is what works for dwarf corpses), and assigning the cage to be brought to the trading depot for trading definitely will.

Dying (ceasing to be alive) is also not a Moodable skill. Even totally unskilled Dwarves seem to do it correctly.

Ah, seeds just need to be dumped from inside the cage...

Set a garbage dump zone if you don't already have one; using the look key (k) highlight the cage and press enter... then enter again on the seed (this 'views' the seed within the cage) and then D for dump. A dwarf will dump the seed and leave the cage free, just reclaim the seed and proceed to murder more elves.  :D
